Insurance for a tourist driving my car?

    Hi,

I'm leaving the country for a few weeks and a friend is coming over from Poland to look after the house & pets. I want her to be able to drive my (Irish-reg) car while she's here, now how do I do that, any ideas? Tried googling for a while with no joy.
She has a car in Poland and she's insured there - is it possible for her to use that insurance for driving around here (if her insurance company allows that, of course)?
    She's not a resident here.

    Any help much appreciated.

Surely, it's a case of ringing your insurance company and adding the said person as a named driver to your policy.

That would work apart from the fact that she's not a resident here, theoretically I could lie to the insurance company but I'm looking for a proper way here.

I doubt a Irish insurance company will insure a non-resident on your car for a few weeks, and if they do it'll cost quite a lot. Best way is to ring your broker/ins company.

I have done it before with somebody from Australia with no problems.

I've added a US resident to my insurance while they were on holidays here.

Simply rang my insurance company and had them added, minimum period was a month and it cost me €70. All the insurance company wanted was the persons details and a copy of their driving license from their own country faxed into them

As for some of the other posters done this for South African visiters before - no issue (as side from a small charge) getting my insurers to add them to the policy.

Thanks for the info, it did work, 73 quid to get her insured for 3 weeks.

I'm gonna throw in some keywords here so that other folks can find this thread easily:
how to insure a tourist for driving an irish car
    car insurance for tourist
    short term insurance for tourist
    foreign resident driving irish car
car insurance for foreign friend to drive my irish registered car
