Pay related query

I have just found out that the receptionist is the same firm as me is on more money than I and the new typist that the firm are taking on will also be earning more money than I.

I am pretty annoyed because I hold a more senior position than both of these people and from my point of view it seems that they are paying me less because of my age. The receptionist is 40 and the new typist is in her 30s while I am 24.

Is there anything I can do about this?

Nothing much. Ask for a pay raise related to your performance, and not [snob] "because those little peasants are on more than me"[/snob]

Maybe you are paid less on an experience scale.

I don't think so. The receptionist has never worked in a legal office before and the last time she worked in an office environment was 15 years ago.

The new typist has worked in a legal office but never in this specified area of law whereas I have for 6 years.

 yeah, that's exactly my attitude.

Are you underpaid for your role and experience? If so then make a reasonable and justified request for a raise or start looking for a new job. If you're paid the going rate then you'll likely just have to suck it up or consider becoming a receptionist or typist.

I feel I am underpaid for my role and experience.

I have already been a receptionist and a typist and I have progressed onto the next stage, that's where I'm coming from on this.

I had a similar problem before...accidentally found out that my assistant at work was getting paid more than me. I was about 20 and she was about 28, I had been there a lot longer than her and she was hired specifically to assist me. So I went to the Managing Director of the company and complained about it and asked for a pay rise to what she was getting and to be back paid that amount since she started! And it worked! I got back paid the difference of about 5 months! :D
I didn't ask for more than her but I though it was fair to be paid at least the same amount.

That's the same sort of situation I'm in. The new typist is being taken on to assist me and my boss, she won't necessarily be my assistant but given that she will also be assisting me is not fair that I at least get paid the same wage as her.

I'm going to suggest it to my boss tomorrow (on a day off today) and see what the response is.

    Thanks for the helpful replies

If there are any "average salary" tables for your industry that you can get your hands on, that might help your case.

I wouldn't necessarily open the conversation with "I want to get paid more than Mary and Joan", but "I'd like a salary review - as a junior elephant trainer with 3 years experience, I feel that I am not being paid enough. The average wages of a junior elephant trainer in our location at the moment is in the region of €200,000 a year more than I earn, and I'd appreciate it if we can discuss that".

It also helps if you can demonstrate the benefits that you bring to the company: "The purple elephant last month was able to be trained in 85% of the normal time thanks to my using the wiggle-woggle technique which I found during reseaching knobbly-knees. This meant we saved $x in peanuts for rewards, and achieved very high customer satisfaction."

Thanks for that example, made me laugh!
