A very very stupid question.

And yes, there are such things as stupid questions. Anyway, I noticed something odd this morning. With my recent moaning about my mileage, I'm paying close attention to my trip odometer as opposed to the main odometer showing 85000 miles.

The problem is that I've been assuming my trip odo is in kms (main one in miles) I was told this by a friend who drove a Corsa B while learning to drive and took it as gospel even though it didn't make much sense. If the trip odo is indeed in miles my mileage is not in fact 23-27mpg, it's 37-43mpg.

Have I been incredibly stupid? Go nuts.

    Yes, you are stupid! :p

If the main one is miles, then so is the ODO

Zero it, drive a mile on the main ODO, then see what the trip says. Simples. It should be miles on a car of that age though.

This isnt going to end well btw:p

I did that this morning and didn't trust it (it came out 1=1), that's why I came on Motors to make an arse of myself :o

Faire play to you, Confab, most of us wouldn't have the balls to admit that. I know I certainly wouldn't.;)

I never bother hiding my occasional bouts of stupidity, people always find out in the end!

On a related note, I just got an insurance quote on an MX-5 for an extra €50 a month. Very, very tempting.

If you ask me, not following up on that would be a lot sillier than the odometer thing!

Lots of people ask really stupid q's. Some one asked about getting new spark plugs for their Golf GTI yesterday "I assume I should get 4" or similar :D

If you have the option of acquiring a nice, preoperly designed and genuinely fun car instead of a horrible soul destroying 3 cyl corsa (you may remember my 2 lawnmowers raping eachother rant) and you don't do it then you must beat yourself, repeatedly, then come back here and be beaten with words, then go away :D:p

And another quote on a Fiat Coupe 16V turbo for €100 extra a month till the end of March. I'm surprised my broker is quoting me tbh. I think a turbo Coupe is pushing it a bit for a provisional driver though. I'd be running it on boost all the time.

Well, no... you'd be running it on boost for about 20 minutes and then it would probably fail in some kind of spectacularly dramatic fashion. My father had one of those for a while, banana yellow, and it seemed to be designed in such a way as to be able to break down at will for the most minute of reasons and cost the maximum amount of money possible to fix.

It was a ridiculously stupid car, badly made, quite dodgy/dangerous to drive due to questionable handling (seemed to have a mind of it's own) but was actually pretty fast and kind of fun when it actually worked

P.S. do your driving test! (and pass it)

You know the Solar System is actually in an Octavia's boot? That's how big.

Acceleration from the VAG TDI is usually described by owners as unreal.

Are the 2.0 GTi not 4 cylinder? Doesn't seem a stupid question to me

They are 4 cylinder, and have always been 4 cylinder. Since 1976 I think.
