maintenance and servicing questions

apologies if this is a common topic to talk about but have gone through a good few pages to make sure there isn't another thread on this.

i have just bought myself a 2nd hand road bike (lapierre) from a friend and I want to give it a clean/service.

i don't want to go messing with gears too much as i do not know enough about them yet, but would like to service it myself as i like to get my hands dirty.

does anyone have some quick pointers on how to approach it?
what should i be using to get dirt/grease off the frame? (white spirits?)
what parts of the bike are ok to take off and clean without messing up the gears and related settings?
what should be done to clean the chain? if anything?

i've looked at the maintenance wiki on one of the sticky thread but it goes into way too much detail for me.

    any help and advice appreciated,
    thanks

I use a muck-off chain / casette degeaser from halfords, 10 minutes then warm soapy water, hose down - mind not to hose into bearings, dry off, 3-in-1 for all points, then chain lube while turning crank and running through gears. Used to be after long rides but recently once every fee weeks :eek:i also use toothbrush / tweezers to get sh1t out of cassette. Turn bike upside down and let drop of 3in1 run into cables whilst feathering brakes. I dont know much more than that like greasing bearings or anything

Tagging onto this thread, does anyone know of any bikes shops that run basic bike maintenance courses?

I don't, but maintenance is your LBSs bread and butter so you probably won't find many. Theres plenty on line stuff though

Rothar in Phibsborough do bike maintenance courses, usually held one Saturday a month. You have to book/pay in advance (it's about €40) check out their website or Facebook page. I'd linky but I'm on the mobile &....effort
