Tryed ringing them but got no reply but from there FAQ section:

    Q. What happens if they get wet?
    A. As with any pyrotechnic device,

Sounds to me like Tanerite available in the US because it needs impact to make it ignite.

Ill ring DOJ to confirm later.

Right, Ive rang both Firebird (talked to to John Green) and after ringing the DOJ (and told to) I Emailed them the details.

John, who seems like a really nice guy wouldnt go into too much detail as to the composition of the Firebirds themselves (trade secret, would have had to kill me etc etc) but confirmed that they are not like Tanerite and are classed as 1.4S, in the UK they are classed as a theatrical pyrotecnic.

John was more than delighted for the call/interest and would happily send to Ireland however shipping cost would/could be a problem.

Im still waiting for a reply from the DOJ as I only sent the email today.

    Will keep all informed.

Check out Donal Mc Cloy in Northern Ireland. They either have them or know someone here that does.

Sorry in the delay in replying but ive been up the walls. Within a few days of contacting the DOJ I got this back:

"In relation to your inquiry to import these pyrotechnic based targets
    please clarify the following;

Please provide all relevant details in relation to the range where is
it intended to use these targets such as location, name of
owner/operator of the range, is the range authorised and for what
    type of firearms.
Please provide all manufacturer supplied information in relation to
the product including Safety Data Sheet and Technical Data Pack
Where is it intended to store these pyrotechnics?

In all cases, and without prejudice to paragraph 1 above, an import
licence is required to import any pyrotechnic into the State. This
licence may be issued by the Minister provided that all of the necessary
clarifications and documentation requested by the Minister to support
the import application are provided and acceptable.

These clarifications and documentation could include

Competent Authority Document (CAD) classifying the pyrotechnic for
    transport
    CE Cert where applicable
Suitable arrangements for the transport of the pyrotechnic in
accordance with the ADR are in place for after the importation
Suitable arrangements, in accordance with the Explosives Act 1875,
are in place for the storage of the pyrotechnic after importation
Evidence of competence of the importer in respect of the pyrotechnic
    to be imported
A range authorisation issued by the local Garda Superintendent of the
District where the range is located specifically authorising the use
of this pyrotechnic on the range

Attached is Public Guidance Notes on Explosive Legislation for your
    information

    Regards,"

The email looks alot worse than it seems when reading. I have been asking about on these and apparently there are dealers in the south offering targets like this (I cant remember who they were) either way as I am preparing to appeal a licence refusal I currently am not in the position to persue this further.

What I will say to anyone who is interested.....

    (i) CAD forms are is used within the UK which is not required for the use of pyrotecnics or ammuntion.

(ii) If the uk requires a CE cert it will suffice here, if it doesnt require it then they will not be required here.

(iii) As this pyrotecnic is classed as ammuntion its transportation requirements are no different than ammunition and i dont know of any RFD who uses anythig but there own vehicles to transport ammuntion.

(iv) In the FAQ section of the firebird website the question is asked "Q. What is the maximum range that Firebird will work at ?" with the following reply "A. Firebird has been tested with number 6 shot at up to 35 yards however the visual effect will be appreciated far more by shooters and spectators alike if used at a range of 15 – 20 yards."

Bearing in mind that a .22 (as an example) can be shot effectivly past 100 meters (109 yards) I cannot see why there would be a problem with using these on an authorised range.

I hope that someone who has the time either imports them or follows up with RFDs who can supply them.

    GH
