No glowplug light or ECU light in dash

A friend of mine has a 2005 diesel vw caddy.

He recently got a starter replaced and is now having trouble starting it.

The dash shows all the usual lights when the ignition is turned on.

However, the glowplug light and the engine management light do not come on at all.

As a consequence the car will not start. it will try turn over.

He said he also replaced the battery in his key and has also tried using his spare key, with no effect. Any ideas?

I wonder is the 109 relay blown somehow when mechanic reinstalled the starter? He did say there was a blown fuse on the starter, so I wonder what else may be damaged!

It can't be the changing of the battery in the key, as the spare key does not work either.

    Car battery is fine.

    any comments are welcome.

These can give crankshaft position sensor problems.

Just back from seeing the van for the first time myself.

It can't be the immobilizer can it?

When the key is inserted and ignition turned on the yellow immobilizer light (symbol of car and key) comes on and then goes out as normal. Also the central locking works fine, so van must recognize the key, right?

I saw on another post somewhere that said relay 109 seems to give trouble and that it powers the ECU and glowplugs.

I can't seem to locate it.

All I saw in the fuse box in the engine bay on the passenger side was a 103 relay, 458 relay and two 433 relays.

Relay 109 is on the older caddy/golf etc, It doesnt have any bearing on your problem.
Check all fuses and fusible links
I dont like the sound of "He did say there was a blown fuse on the starter"
I can just see him taking off the main cable from the starter with the battery connected.
Has it started since the starter has been replaced and why was the starter replaced in the first place?

Having just looked at the pic, is that raindrops in the fusebox or were the there already (hint-hint)

If you think the relay is at fault, then you can easily bypass it to rule it in / out.

Have you checked to see if the engine is getting fuel? These have a lift pump.
Try by pass the glowplug relay also. You said the engine turns over, right?

Rain drops are fresh, no leaks there ;-)

How would you go about bypassing the glowpug relay? where its it?
Would you just insert a wire to bridge between various contacts having pulled out the glowplug relay?

She definately turns over. You would think she has started (rev's etc) but once you leave go of the key to return on the on position, she stalls. So she is definitely getting fuel.

You need to do a diagnostic scan on this and see what controllers communicates or not,
A break in comms between instrument and ecu will cause loss of both lights and the ecu will not receive a run signal from instruments
Bridging relays etc is not going to get you anywhere on this,
There is a huge problem with corrosion in the under bonnet fuse boxes on these
