Help Me Pick a Car Please - Golf etc.

Looking to upgrade my first car which is an 02 Astra 1.4. Looking for something a bit newer and with a bit more poke. I'd imagine my mileage would be around 10,000 - 15,000 miles.

Anyone have any recommendations. Doesn't necessarily have to be a Golf. Main things would be that its a bit more modern than my own car, bit faster (not looking for anything crazy) and not too bad on petrl / diesel.

Price range would be about 5000 - 8000.

Yeah just don't know what I want to be honest. How would a 2006 1.9TDI perform for example in comparrisson to the 1.4 Astra I have?

Just looking for a few pointers on similar cars that might appeal to me.

I think they all might be a little much for someone with a 1.4 Astra, looking at Golfs! How about a nice 1.6 Focus or something?

Yeh was thinking that myself but said since he didnt really specify engine size limits id throw them out there see if it sparked an interest yeh never know:)

Really like the look of that Alfa. Know anything about their reliability or anything. All I know is Topgear's verdict on Alfa's!

The Focus and Astra might be a bit tough for insurance too although i've always liked the look of the RS

Now I wouldnt be an expert like some of the lads on here, but from im led to belive there not as bad they used to be regards reliabilty, especially there diesel engines ive been told are very good.

Not too fussy about petrol or diesel. Would there be a big difference in performance / mpg between these 2 cars?

Well as far as i can see the 2.0 petrol is 165bhp the diesel is 150 bhp

The petrol is meant to give 32mpg and the 45mpg.

Im gonna second the Mazda 3. good decent solid car.

Volvo C30
Citroen C4
Audi A3
Golf
Suzuki swift

but of course im gonna recommend the 2006 and up Honda civic :P

but all the above i'd be happy with myself for a car !

Me personally would stay away from Fiat, Peugeot, Hyundai and Nissan.

Just to update this. Should be picking up an Alfa Romeo GT next week. Deal done and as long as everything is as described i'll be a happy man. Wouldn't have thought of one if it wasn't for this thread!
