I feel so guilty my only trips to this forum are when I have a problem and need help, wish I could give something back. Anyway here I am again with a problem.

The sound has stopped working on my PC, I just get noise out of the speakers. Its not the speakers themselves as I have tried earphones straight into back of the PC.
The noise isn't there all the time only when the PC would be making a sound normally.
The sound card is just on the motherboard, ASUS M2N-E-SLI, I've tried updating the drivers through device manager, it says up to date also tried installing from the original disc that came with the board.

I'm guessing the sound is just ****ed but just thought I'd check here before I go out and get a separate sound card, see if anyone had some suggestions.

    Thanks.

You could try disabling it altogher - right-click My Computer, Device Manager and disable your sound card. Then reboot and see if your PC picks it up again.

You could also try physically removing the sound card and putting it into a different slot on the motherboard if there's one free.

Are you using Avast anti virus?

I tried disabling and re-boot and re-enable but no joy still just white noise out of it.

It actually an on board graphics on the motherboard so can't disconnect.

I do have avast, but I've had for a long time with no problem, do you think it is the cause of it?

My sound went funny, it all came out "gurgly" and crackling so having tried upgrading drivers, defragging etc. I had disinsyalled Avast and installed the free AVG> All back to normal. It's worth a try as AVG is a pretty decent antivirus and does what it says on the tin.

    go to start,programs,acessorys,system tools,,system information,
software evironment, click services , look for windows audio service, if its not on, click start service, windows audio.Does the audio card device, show up ,in system, hardware, device manager as ok, no yellow tab.no exclamation mark.
if you are using win7 there may be a different menu to see the system services.
