A friend of mine has asked me to look into the murder of his granny in 1973. This took place in the ROI. I was wondering if its possible to access any of the garda files for this?

Was there a prosecution? Coroner hearing? There may be newspaper reports.

I imagine the first thing to do is assemble as much data as you can and then approach the Garda. There is an office in Templemore that deals with Data Protection applications and that might be a good place to start.

Has your friend received appropriate counseling. Things may be rough ahead.

There was a prosecution and i have the name of the person who did it (it was a neighbour) He is just interested to know if motive ever came out. As for counselling... I dont think he cares all that much he is just interested in what really happened. All he Knows is that she was stabbed with a screwdriver by someone who lived above her.

Im mostly interested to know if he has the right to get the info from the courts/guards pertaining to the case. We did look at the papers and there was small paragraphs here and there.. apparently there was a lot of murders that year! 17 in dublin by the time of feburary.

And he might find out things that he may realise that he didn't want to hear or know.
