Can somebody please explain why I can buy a HD TNT (terrestrial digital) box which has both MPEG2 and MPEG4 decoding software and Dolby Digital sound in France for less than €60 and the price of an MPEG4 only box here is in the region of €100

If using Scart or HDMI connection would one work on our PAL TV's, does it matter that the RF output is probably SECAM-L to facilitate their older tv's

If the French box is compatible, would one not be a very good choice for people who can receive broadcasts from the UK MPEG2 service.

The French spec for TNT HD is not the same as Saorview Ireland. There are 66m people living in France, supply and demand.

Middleware MHEG5 used for Saorview will not be on the TNT HD boxes (they use MHP) Also French boxes do not adhere to Nordic 2. If you can live without that fine. €60 is actually dear for a French box. They can be bought in France for €40-€45. Sigmatek DVBR-520HD/Akira DHB-B34HR work fine and play media files but no text.

All MPEG4 boxes receive MPEG2 as well, it's downward compatible.

All MPEG-4 receivers be they TNT-HD, freeview-HD or Saorview are backwards compatible with MPEG-2.

I got a saorview box last week in Hardly Normal for 75 euros. Was marked 98 euros on the box but they had a promotional sign listing it as 80 and the guy said he would take a fiver off it. Aren't the RRPs of these boxes supposed to be in the region of 80 euros?

    No.

There are several Saorview certfied boxes on the market rebadged under different brand names all based on Vestel's T8's which were approved.

So watch out for Saorview certifcation products in Tescos, Aldi, Power City and Hardly Normal.
