Am I too young to smoke a pipe?

I'm considering taking up smoking a pipe, would like to cut down on the cigs, and would like to try smoking loose tobacco, roll ups do not appeal. I enjoy cigars but find them too long a smoke. So think a pipe could be the answer, however OH thinks its pretentious, for a person my age to smoke a pipe (mid thirtys), she thinks I would look like an old fart... What do you think?

If you want to smoke a pipe smoke a pipe.

If you think it'll make you look bad, don't.

I've been smoking one since I was 25, I think it's a great way to take tobacco and I couldn't give a monkey's who thinks what about my supposed pretensions.

Do you find the smell off the pipe is very strong to be carrying around with you ?

For example would you bring the pipe to work go out have a toke and come back into your desk with the pipe?

How do you store the pipe in between smoking it ?

No. I clean it out after use. There's nothing in it that'll smell.

As opposed to leaving it sitting in the park? Yes, I bring my pipe back with me every time I go out to use it.

I have a old compact camera pouch that holds the pipe, cleaners, companion, matches and tobacco.

Proper attitude to have for most things in your life and not just the pipe.

The smell of the pipe is rather more plesant then the smell of a ciggey and will draw a lot of attention, mostly positive.
I'll pack a bowl and take it to the pub. After a few puffs on it I'll put wait for it to go out and then put it straight into my jacket pocket. It's wedges nicely in my jacket and has yet to tip over or set my jacket alight. :)
When at home I have a pipe rack to keep the pipes in. You could get one for keeping your pipe on your desk in work.

Meet up with someone who smokes a pipe, try a few different tobaccos and gauge the reactions of other people (if you are still concerned by attitudes).

Maybe a 'noob' question but would you inhale from a pipe?

No. It's like a cigar, you enjoy the flavours. Nicotine hit comes from the small amout of smoke that does go into your lungs but inhaling it like a ciggy will cause the multiverse to implode.

I beg to differ on that. I don't inhale at all with cigars, but I do slightly with pipe smoke (though obvs not as much as one would with a ciggy, for the implosionary reasons specified).

It's the other way around for me. I often inhale the tail end of a mouthful of cigar smoke but never the pipe.
You realise that this means when we meet up at a Beers&Smokes the multiverses are going to both implode and explode simultainously. That should be rather exciting. :)

You're never too young to start smoking a pipe, IMO. I got a present of one for my 20th and started smoking it regularly after that. Unfortunately, funds being low, I haven't been able to buy pipe tobacco in quite a while. By the way, I'm 22 now so it's not the distant past. At first, my mates were surprised to see me smoking one but everyone loves the smell and wants to give it a go because it's so much nicer than cigs.

I recommend Peterson's Deluxe Mixture as a good all-rounder. It's the one I always come back to.

Just a quick recommendation for you to tryout a site called tobaccoreviews. It makes it easier to make a decision on what tobacco to smoke. Ive gotten some amazing tobaccos based on the reviews. Thats the great thing about pipe smoking, there is so much variety to suit everyones palette. The top 5 I have smoked are: (in no particular order) Sam Gawith Full Virginia Flake,Orlik Dark Kentucky, Petersons Old Dublin, Dunhill MyMixture 965 and Mick McQuaid Plug.

Sorry to ninja a thread, just wanted to ask whereabouts you'd get a pipe?

Any decent tobacconist. In Dublin Fox's or Petersons on Grafton Street, or Barry's on South King Street. No idea about Mayo, though.

I bought mine in Turkey. There are often great ranges in tobacconists in central and eastern Europe.

I have 6 pipes at the moment some good some not so fantastic.
Peterson Aran 120 Bought in Powells Music Shop Galway.
Peterson System Standard 313 bought in Smokeking.co.uk
An Unbranded Churchwarden bought through Bonds of Oxford St's shop on Ebay.
Savinelli Tundra 129 6mm Filter bought through Smokeking.co.uk
Parker Special Selection Shell Briar Bent Pipe p bought through Mysmokingshop.co.uk
A Bruyere Garantie pipe bought on Ebay (My 1st Pipe) 2nd hand. To see was it worth it. Yes it mudda F***ing was!

I have discovered that Petersons pipes are cheaper in Powells Galway than on the internet, this was one of those moments in which you don't know whether to cry or to laugh as it's such a rare occurance. I buy my baccy from either mysmokingshop or now (waiting on 1st delivery) annonces.de.

The best pipe I have which I use to smoke Virginia's only is the Savinelli, all the pipes that I own are basic entry level pipes but this one is exceptional, it smokes everything well. You can buy filters on ebay etc. After smoking cigerettes for 10 years and smoking cigars for 4 years, after that I have been smoking pipes since Janurary this year and for me it was like discovering a part of your body that you never thought you had, or perhaps a part of your mind given that pipe smoking is so relaxing and full of contentment. Maybe the best kept secret in the world...

I prefer Sam Gawith's 1792 Flake, I sometimes mix it with a plug tobacoo – usually Condor.

I like a heavy flake. What is Dark Kentucky like?

Be sure to get a decent one – otherwise you will be disappointed. The biggest fault with a poor pipe is that the bowl will get too hot.

Be prepared to spend at least €80 – but to get a really decent smoke a good deal more.

Its very good, when I first opened the tin the smell was amazing, difficult to describe, almost like a rich combination of coffee and a sweet dark jamaica gingerbread cake. You can taste the sweetness when you smoke it, its like a very dark brown sugar, but I wouldnt describe it as a very heavy smoke. Its full bodied definetly. Have you ever tried Petersons Irish Flake? Ive heard it blows the head off you on an empty stomach.

I've found that smoking a pipe attracts far more positive reactions from women then either cigars or ciggies.

Yes. I have had women say things to me such as "you remind me of my father".

[It's flattering, because sometimes they are young enough to be my grandaughter.]

I have found the exact same. Without exception. Either their father or grandfather, or some other older male member of the family smoked a pipe and all those fond memories just flood right back into their mind. After her surprise of seeing a pipe after all these years, I always ask them "can you remember how it smelt?" What happens after is like watching somebody being wrapped up in an imaginary blanket of the warmest kind of comfort.
