    Can any1 help me?
I am looking to buy a 2008 diesel focus 1.6. Does any1 know any common problems with these cars? I was talking to a sales man lately and he was telling me that the 1.8TDCI would be as good in diesel as the 1.6TDCI. Would that be true? Also, which engine would be better? I am doing over 500 miles per week so I want a car I can rely on and v economical. Would be grateful for any advise :)

Bought a '08 1.6tdci for the wife's commute in '09 it's since been sold as we have emigrated.

I can't remember all the reasoning at this stage but I researched it well at the time and it came down firmly in favour of the 1.6.

The 1.6 engine is the same as found in Pugeots, Citroens etc. and is smoother, more economical and more reliable than the 1.8.

Without trying too hard it would return 4.5litres/100kms for the full weeks driving. On a long run it was possible to get under 4.0.

It was the 90bhp version as I coudn't find a 110bhp at the time.

    1.6 tdci wins.

1.6 probably (marginally?) better, but will cost more.

Kinda like the vag 1.9tdi vs 2.0 tdi battle.

1.8 tdci is more reliable and is not full of modern tech, of course its not as smooth, good on fuel and all that, but treat it right and it wont break your heart, that's my impression anyway.

    thanks guys!

I heard a few complaints of the turbo going in the 1.6 TDCIs. Any thoughts on this?

If you can try and get the 110bhp 1.6TDCI - bit more poke for your money! Mine was an import.

1.6 has a FAP (same as DPF), which is bad news if you do lots of short journeys.

1.6 TDCi 90bhp version doesn't have a DPF. The 90bhp was sold upto late 2010 in the more lower spec models.

Don't know much about the 1.6 but I know a few people with older 1.8's and all of them have gone over 200K miles without anything other than regular servicing.

I recently bought a 1.8tdci zetec focus with sports pack 2008. The Ford dealer I bought it of had nothing good to say about the 1.6 version - Turbo trouble. Also a mechanic told.me the same. And this Guy programmes rally cars.......so there must be something to it?

Anywho, happy with 1.8. Pokey and very comfortable indeed got another 640mls to a tank last week.

How many flywheels have you gone through?:p

The turbo in the 1.6tcdi becomes unreliable when its not serviced. Keep it serviced and that turbo will last ages. A guy I work with takes the small filter out of the banjo bolt at the turbo oil feed as he believes the little filter gets blocked up and slows or stops oil flow to the turbo. He's right. He says whats better no oil or oil all the time, if a bit of dirt goes down there its going to be pushed out straight away.

I've got the 110bhp version of the 1.6 TDCi, and I'm getting currently somewhere between 55 and 56 mpg, with a full tank around the 650 mile mark (computer calculates it based on current mpg).

That said, most of my driving is motorway in the UK, so frequent drives upwards of 45 minutes at 60-70 mph. On longer drives (i.e. 3/4 hours) I've had stellar mpg out of the car.

60mpg on a longer journey in the bigger C5 (110bhp version)

Go for the 1.6. Excellent engine fitted in rakes of cars (Volvos, fords, PSA group cars ect.)
