ATM fees for Thailand

Just would like to know if BOI have increased their ATM transaction fees for foreign countries?

Am travelling Asia at the moment and will be heading to Thailand next week. I met an irish man yesterday who claimed that BOI had increased their fees for transactions if you withdraw from your Credit card(which I am) and that its cheaper to use your bank ATM card?

I've no idea whats going on as my research before I left home firmly led me to believe that using online banking to move money over from current acc to credit card and then withdrawing from ATM was cheaper than withdrawing using bank card.

Anyone know what the ATM local fees are in Thailand and whats the max withdrawal limit?

Really pissed off about it, but then its the same for everyone obviously.

    Thanks.

Current BOI charge for Cirrus is 3.5% (min €3.17). The Thai bank may also hit you for a couple of hundred Baht (but at least they will tell you upfront), so you could end up paying 7% or 8% which is pretty steep. I haven't used a credit card for cash lately because I assumed it would be worse.

I don't know what the limit is - I've had trouble getting over €100 equivalent in some countries, but no trouble in others.

when i was there i had an AIB account in ireland. I found my max withdrawl limit was the usual €600 which is set by AIB.
any time i withdrew say €200, it would deduct €203 from my account due to fees.

thanks for the info. We are still none the wiser though. Landing in Thailand tomorrow from KL and have been using preloaded credit card to withdraw money on as I was informed by BOI that it would work out much cheaper that way. But Thailand is a different story from what we're hearing in relation to fees charged on top on the min 150baht ATM fee.

Anyone in Thailand at the moment that can shed some light on the subject?

When I was in Thailand during February and like yourself I used my preloaded Bank of Ireland Credit Card and the rates were not that bad. However I also used my Laser card twice and when I came home I saw I had been charged €8.50 for each transaction on the Laser card so I would definitely avoid using the Laser unless you had no other choice, the Laser also had a 10,000THB (€250) limit wheras the Credit Card allowed for far more.

When you use the ATM's it will offer to fix the transaction rate in Euro for you charging X amount of Euro, however this will work out more expensive than if you allow the transaction to go through in Thai Baht which will see you getting a better exchange rate from your credit card. When I went to withdraw 10,000 baht it offered it to me at €1/39bt but when I declined their rate I got €1/42bt instead.

Don't withdraw large sums of money and never withdraw it on the way back to your hotel at the end of the night, keep as much as you can afford to lose and if taking a bus keep all your valuable belongings on your person and not in your case underneath where they will be stole, like happened to me!

Enjoy your trip, Thailand is great, just have your wits about you and you'll be grand!
