I have 4 televisions that I THINK might be obsolete next year when the analogue service is switched off allegedly.

Anyone know of any use they could be put to?

Maybe they are useless but maybe you know of someone who ccould get use out of them?

They are surprisingly clean and little used although of the old chunky type.

They're not obsolete. You just need a Saorview set top box.

They can continue to be used with a Soarview STB attached after analogue switchoff (late 2012) for the Saorview DTT service.

And as CoalBucket says a video / dvd player will continue to work with these TVs as will a satellite/cable/mmds receiver.

they work fine with a set top box as discussed but the resolution isnt as good as modern Flat Tv's and its pointless to watch any HD channels on one. Personally I Just brought my old CRT TV to the recycling center as I couldnt even give it away when I got a flatscreen to use with my HTPC.

I kept my old 21" 4:3 CRT for games consoles.

As the others have said ,if you get a saorview approved set-top box you're away in a hack. Presuming they all have a scart socket, you will be able to see the huge increase in picture quality over the analogue one.

Only TV's without a SCART are too expensive to convert using a STB. However, sets that are not wide-screen are probably not worth converting, particulaly if they have a small screen. A new small TV is not much more than a STB anyway.

Low cost STBs will be available next year [I predict] in the price bracket of €30 or so. They will be compatible but not certified. If not, I'll bring some in myself.

Depends on the size of the TV, but as Sam says you'd have to weigh up whether it's worth spending €80 on an STB, or €130-€150 on a certified TV. Different equation if STB's do come down to €30 though.

Adverts.ie .... free stuff ....... might be some who would like to have one of those ...... better than dumping them I would think ......

I had a 32 inch Sony wide screen CRT tv that I could not give away but it sold within a few days on Adverts.ie for €70 if irc.

UPC and Sky will not affect the use of TVs.
