3G Antennae question

My folks are in a broadband blackspot but can get a (pretty weak) reception from a three modem. I have heard that if you sign up for the National Broadband Scheme Three have to come out and install a repeater if your signal is not up to scratch.
However I have seen these repeaters online and most if them cost about €30 so I can't possible see how something that cheap could improve the reception (they are small too).
I was thinking of getting one of those 3G antennas, they are fairly pricey and I think you have to align them to face the nearest mast?
I was looking at this one (http://www.digitclik.it/en/shop/umts/product/kit-umts-3g-wifi-router-tp-link--huawei-e122--17dbi-antenna--cab)
My folks have an iPhone also, which can be used as a modem; can I use this with the above antenna to avoid the expense of signing a contract for the NBB for something that may not work?

If you have a contract with 3 and have bad reception then they will fit an ariel set up for free.
However see my thread on "speak to 3" board regarding their call centre and a breakdown.
