A friend is thinking of buying a 1981 merc in UK. Car is not in the best of nick and want to know if he brings in the car will it be subject to an nct ? if it fails the nct , will the car still be cleared or will nct have to be passed before new number is issued ??

If it qualifies as a classic/vintage car then it doesn't have to do an NCT. It does have to be driveable though

What happens if it doesn't pass the nct, is it still cleared or do you have to wait to pass the nct :p

The first trip to the NCT is to have an assessment for VRT,you can then register it.
When its registered you then make an appointment for an NCT test if its applicable.
At least I think thats the way it works:)

Does the vehicle have to make it for VRT inspection under its own power or can it be trailered.....

Yeah, this is what I was querying, don't think this car will pass an nct as it needs some work. Will drive etc, but wanted to be sure that he could register it without passing the nct :confused:

It has to be running and driveable

The registration will not be completed until the car is roadworthy. You'd have to get the work done and bring it back. It would then be re-registered and you'd then have to have a full NCT done.
