    Hi,

I graduated from CS in 2010, started in 2007. When I started, there was 85 places and the points were 445.

However, at that stage you could only choose to specialise in one of three specialist areas - Video Production, Radio Production or Photography.

For the incoming class, they've added a fourth option to specialise - Performance. This is probably due to the large number of CS students actively involved in the performance societies on campus (such as Drama, Music and Dance). They've added the extra places on the course to account for the people who will specialise in Performance from 2nd year.

I suppose how it affects points will depend on the demand for the course in light of this change. It may attract more applications from those interested in performance (say, who might have gone for Trinity's Drama course, or UL's performance courses). In this sense, the performance specialism on the CS course could mean the course now attracts applicants for those solely interested in performance, who wouldn't have applied before because of the media-only specialism choices.

Then again, they did announce the addition of the performance specialism quite late, so it may not have had enough of an impact in time for the last CAO Change of Mind date, thus may not have attracted that many.

So, in short, it depends on how many new applications come about as a direct result of the addition of the Performance specialism. It could go either way, they could drop if there is not many additional applications to fill the 15 new places, or they could even go up if there is a lot of response to the Performance specialism.

At the end of a long, rambling post, the moral of the story is, there's no way of knowing until CAO day! :P

Oh my god I'm so happy I saw your post! I've been wanting to so Communication Studies all my leaving cert year and most of 5th year. But after the leaving was over, I thought it went good, but not good enough for me to get the points. I really hope that this will bring the points down some so I stand a better chance!:D

Does this mean even less funding for Multimedia and Journalism?
