Excellent stuff! Well done to them both.

Nice to see sub 9 going twice. Hopefully now a lot more Irish athletes will go sub 9.

I bow to both of them, well done !

With all those records, I hope the course was measured accurately.

Seriously though is there a reason why this course produces records?

The yanks are currently going on about how the European courses are always short....

All course are short. Course wise Austria is know to be pretty fast and I would think weather conditions on Sunday had to help compared to other years.

Austria,Switzerland and Germany just have fast roads...new tarmac heaven in Frankfurt for 180 or 185k

Last year i queried with the German organisers if IRONMAN approved the bike course being 185k due to roadworks. they told me the course length was in the permissable deviations and that no one complains in austria when the run is only 41k. Quite shocked when i got that response and dont know if there is any truth to it.

All courses vary but on the day everyone races the same course :)

The last 800m of the swim is in a tight canal. You get sucked along up it. I swam 1:06 there in 2009 with a fractured collar bone.

The bike is 178km long, its surfaced like a dream. I'm told the only course better surfaced is Roth. Its got brutally steep climbs 14' steep. All over in less than 1km. They then descent at 5-6' for a long while. Course is fully course and is fantastic.

Run course is pancake flat and sheltered.

Biggest problem in Austria is the heat. 37' in 2010 when I did it the second time.

Was 18' on Sunday. And no wind - perfect racing conditions.

The yanks are going nuts over it (its about 20km short on the bike, etc, etc)
I ride on a Computrainer and you can ride the IM courses from America as recorded on race day, in fact I'm about to go do an hour easy on IM St. George course. Its not that the Euro races are fast, its that the yank ones are pi$$ poor designed and organised. Open roads, practically having to get off your bike and carry it over walls. Think the Skerries Triathlon except at IM distances.

It is a fast course, 5-10 minutes faster than Frankfurt and 5 minutes or so faster than Roth. But Joyce Wolfe is a savage athlete and on the mens side it should have been sub nine years ago.

In fact sex adjusted Joyces result is more impressive than the lads.

Van HoeKnacker. Well there were rumours about the previous record holder - another Belgain.

Fair fvcks to the Irish - well done. only question is will Campbell crush the male record in Roth or is he more of a terenzo bozzone.

Great success and along with the magificant achievement of the ten day ironman is good for the sport. Maybe these iron women will move up to the ten day event.

Matt Molloy (9:02.51) is reportedly 42 and 3-4 years ago was a 16-stone smoker - his first IM.

    *Hurries away from tri thread*

Cant see Campbell going faster than 8 49 in his first IM. I'll stick my neck out there and say no way. Just cant see it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say 8:46 debut Ironman.

(as long as he paces first 90km right he's got the tools to do it)

What is the online tracking like for Challenge events?

Declan Doyle had a 9:21 in Kona and is doing roth I think....that performance would suggest he could go 8:49 in Roth?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭bryangiggsy

I'd put my money on Doyle before Campbell. As you said doyle has gone 9.21 in Kona. Campbell has not experienced the distance before. I just think there are too many unknowns. He gets any of his pacing or nutrition wrong and bang goes any chance. Experience in IM is key. We all know Brian Campbell has the endurance and speed over shorter distances but I just cant see it this time it.

    My money is on Doyle.

It's pretty good as far as I'm aware, wasn't tracking myself in Challenge Copenhagen last year, but several people knew how I did/was doing without me having to tell them.

"I've done a pretty extensive analysis on athlete's perfromances and course ratings on Thorsten's Triathlon Rating. (Have a look at course ratings in the main menu, I'll update these after the Austria analysis.) This analysis just looks at results from different athletes between different courses. If there are a decent number of athletes it is possible to statistically distinguish between an athlete just having a good race and the course being quicker than another one. (Regardless of why that would be the case - easier climate, better road surface, even short courses - although I don't believe that this plays a major role.)

Some highlights from the latest course ratings:
    - IM Lake Placid - 1:54
    - IM Hawaii -0:14
    - IM CdA 4:25
    - IM Florida 13:38
    - IM Austria 17:32
    - Challenge Roth 18:54

What this means is that Austria is about 18 minutes quicker than Hawaii. So Marino's 7:45 from Austria would be pretty comparable to van Lierde's course record in Kona. "

    From http://forum.slowtwitch.com/forum/Slowtwitch_Forums_C1/Triathlon_Forum_F1/7%3A45%3A58_P3415877-7

Thorsten, who posted this, has done all manner of stats and break downs on IM courses and races and is widely accepted as the source of all truth on the matter.

Very interesting article and webpage. You still sticking with 8.46 for Campbell with only 82 second difference between Austria and Roth :)

I am reminded of the saying the yanks have.

    "on any given Sunday"

With seconds in it it will be hugely dependant on weather and the lead group pushing each other etc. I am afraid to even hazard a guess at the times.

Joyce Wolfe broke her jawbone 7 weeks out from Austria

Makes her time all the more remarkable! Martin Muldoons report is decent too - http://triathlonireland.com/index.php?id=107&nid=368

And for those who havent caught Joyce's - http://triathlonireland.com/index.php?id=107&nid=367

Didn't realise Joyce's husband was doing Roth - even though its his debut I'd say he'll go close to 9hrs if he's been matching Joyces training volume.

Looks like Doyle and Ryan are reducing the gap on the bike

    Bike times
    Campbell 5 hrs
    Ryan 449
    Doyle 443

Looks like it's a road race with Doyle in the lead for now. Ryan and Campbell leaving t2 around the same time

Estimated finish time after 3.7k of run

    Brian Campbell 834

    My money is on Doyle

Pace has fallen off. Record looks safe. Doyle 1 min ahead of Campbell going into last 10 k

    Doyle beats Campbell.

    Ironman experience wins over?
