Plotting swim map.

Could anyone offer a bit of help please.

Having difficulty gauging distance whilst swimming. I need to plot a distance of 1500 meter for an olympic swim practise. Im in galway and do all my OW swim training in salthill and always start at blackrock tower, just at the bottom of threadneedle road.

The problem with using any of the plotting software on the net, IE- map my ride, is u need two landmarks in which to plot a distance between. As this is cannot be done when looking at a map of the sea ... im looking for suggestions on how to gauge the distance.

Alternatively, if anyone knew somewhere else in the west side of galway that could be used to train for an olympic tri distance , between two measured points, it would be very much appreciated.

    Any other suggestions also welcome...

Walking along the prom, 750m is about the distance from that tower to the far side of Leisureland/Salthill Park. Time yourself swimming that far and back, and use that as your estimated swim time.
Once you have the time you can swim whatever direction you please, but keep swimming for that amount of time and you should have 1,500m done.

noeloreid two routes that may be of help to you

There are also buoys set out from Blackrock which have probably been set by Galway Tri club to give a 750 and 1000m round trip back to the tower. This I am not sure of but you could check with some of the club members.

Galway aquathon wouldn't be any use for me to train for an olympic tri as ya need a verified time before ya can enter the long distance which I dont have and im allready comfortable at 750 meters so I wouldnt be gaining anything by doing that one.

Any idea what colour the buoys are that mark the 750 meter point??

Hi ya noeloreid, if it helps I was suggesting the courses as an idea of differing length swims for you. You can gauge the distance by using the onshore landmarks. You could also have a look at the marker buoys when set out so you have a clearer picture.

The marker buoys are orange and sit opposite the Salthill hotel by the lifeguards hut.. I don't swim in the area so am not 100% on the distances between the buoys. I swim in Loughrea and Renville mostly.

Sorry, misinterpreted you. that's a good point. I have a fair idea of the distance to the bouy now as was chatting to another fella who regularly swims out there and he gave me the distances. cheers sean ;)
