    Guys

After investing in my own AEG I'm wondering what I need to do to maintain it and keep it in good working order?

I tend to wipe down the externals and make sure dirt and muck is removed, but what about keeping the internals in good shape? the AEG came with a barrell rod which i assume is for cleaning out any crap that may be in the barrel, but what about the gears etc?

    Faolchu,

    Cleaning externals is good.

Cleaning inner barrel - I don't know which AEG you have, but be careful running the cleaning rod down, you don't want to push any muck etc down the barrel towards the hop/air nozzle. Always turn off the Hop-up. If you have an M4, you can easily (usually) remove the upper receiver and clean the barrel to your heart's content.

Internals - You really shouldn't have to go near these. Unless your comfortable opening up your gearbox etc. Even then, it's not something I tend to do myself, until something goes wrong.

    I have a G&G GR15.

i have the good sense not to point the AEG muzzel down into anything when I'm at ground level but dirt can still get in so I'll keep what you said in mind about the rod.

liek any good machine I would assume it needs oiling etc from time to time. would i need to do that?

the inner barrel will also pick up dirt just from firing, fiction between the barrel and the bb will cause material to build up in the barrel ( some bbs are worse than others )

Surprisingly...no, you shouldn't have to. The gears themselves usually have 'Gear Grease' in plenty on them already. High End's like G&G should have this done sufficiently for you.

I have number of AEG's which I might open up every year or so just to make sure everything is in okay working order. I use that opportunity to clean up the gearbox, replace the grease if necessary. If your AEG is firing as it should, you shouldn't really need to go near...imo.
