The preliminary census results for 2011 show overall 5.4% population growth since 2006, population now 130,552, highest since 1956. But it's the slowest growth rate in the western region.

Emigration doesn't seem to have had a huge impact yet but the county has one of the highest rates of vacant dwellings at 24.8%.

The town populations listed below have increased in most cases, but the results clearly show the rural population still dominate our towns and if anything there has been more increase in rural population than urban.

Are there maps available of these urban/rural boundaries? some of the figures are unusual with very high rural numbers for Westport and Swinford for example. Would be more useful for research and business planning if population within a radius of a town could be measured.

Swinford (no "e" in the name) includes Killasser, of course, which is the second largest parish in Ireland (although some say that it is the largest). This will make the figures look a little odd I would imagine.

The "e" was the CSOs addition not mine! Yes thought it must include a wide area, perhaps Foxford/Charlestown also as they are missing from the database.

    Yea, I realised the "e" wasn't yours:D.
Foxford I'm sure comes under Ballina, but Callow, which is nearer Foxford, is in the Killasser parish. Not sure about Charlestown.

Westport probably includes Louisburgh etc, so you are talking a massive area.

Areas are divided by political boundaries to the best of my knowledge (or at least the traditional boundaries).

So Lets say in my case Westport town is the Westport Urban (Town Council) electoral area and Westport Rural is the Mayo County Council boundaries.

Well as somebody who did the census enumerator's job in Ballina, I found the Polish people to be the most co-operative about filling in the census form.
