As the title says, the auto sensor cleaning function in my 5DmkII has suddenly started to produce some very audible high pitched squeaks and whirrs. I've never noticed it making any sound before now. Just wondering if this is something I need to worry about? Has anyone else ever experienced this?

I've turned it off for the time being, while I trawl the internet for info, but I'm not really finding anything concrete on whether it's an actual problem or not.

The camera seems to be functioning perfectly fine otherwise.

    Is it under warranty?
It's very hard to tell if the anti dust mechanism is working from an external view apart from the sound so it could be malfunctioning/broken hence the sound.
I would give Canon UK a shout and ask them about it as they might have more info/ it might get a warranty repair (if in warranty and something is wrong).

It's out of warranty unfortunately. I'll give Canon a shout, but defo can't afford their repair costs if it does need fixing. Think I'll just keep it switched off and hope for the best.

    Hopefully it'll last until I can afford a 5DmkIII :D

    Hmmmm,
Most likely they will just tell you to send it in and if it's out of warranty that means €€€
Keeping it off unfortunately wont change it's operation if something has gone wrong so you may as well get it's fair.

If the anti dust system has failed or is failing it shouldn't impede in the standard operation of the camera at all but you may need a sensor clean a tiny bit more often if it stopped working.

If it went for an out of warranty repair I believe the anti dust system on the 5D MKII is part of the sensor assembly part so it wouldn't be worth the price to replace it simply for the anti dust system.

If you are near to Greytones Id be happy to have a look if that would ease your mind to using it again :)

Cheers, but I'm down in Limerick.

I'll give an Canon a shout and see what they say anyways. I don't mind manually cleaning it myself. I give it a full clean regularly and usually give the sensor a blast from the rocket blower before and after a days use.

    Thanks for the advice :)

    No problem.

Ah I see, that's grand then and it shouldn't cause many problems if you clean it anyway.
Also do be careful with how hard you clean the sensor as that could have caused it to get damaged or jammed possibly if the swab had too much force when at the edge of the sensor.
Perhaps have a look with a light and magnifier and see if anything is obstructing it's operation or jamming the mechanism downward so that it cant move freely if you get me.

Glad to help and those rocket blowers are so handy and save so much time :)
