A GARDA HAS received treatment for burns to his face, neck and shoulder after he had boiling oil thrown on him while on duty.

The officer, believed to be in his 20s, had responded to a callout to a domestic incident at a flat at Mary Aikenhead House, James’s Street, Dublin yesterday. The Examiner reports today that the garda, and another man who was at the flat, had the boiling oil thrown at them but the garda was hit head-on. He had to be treated for shock and burns at St James’s Hospital while the other man was discharged. The Irish Daily Star claims that the officer will not suffer permanent damage.

A woman in her 20s is to appear before the courts this morning in relation to the attack. She was arrested yesterday and brought to Kevin Street Garda station.

The Garda Representative Association’s president Damien McCarthy said that the attack highlighted the dangers gardai face on duty.

This is everything that is wrong with the system here, bail given to this animal. My thoughts and prayers are with this gentleman and his family...more protection should be given to the these frontline members.

Couldn't believe it-just read IT reports. What galls me is that she had the nerve to do it, especially given she's a non-national. Has she been naturalised? If so , revoke her citizenship and deport her, after she's done some hard time. I guess I'll get slammed for the "non-national " bit; for anyone to do it is appalling, but for someone who is allowed to come live here, well it seems to be a real kick in the teeth. Strangely the gardai didn't object to bail as long as she surrendered her passport.

    Bit more info here.

A young Garda suffered bad burns to his face and chest after intervening in a vicious domestic dispute in Dublin yesterday.

The unfortunate Michael O’Shea, 29, was attempting to break up a nasty row between a woman from the Ivory Coast and her partner and got caught in the crossfire when the woman flung a pot of boiling cooking oil in the direction of her partner.

Other residents in the flat complex in Dublin’s city centre came to O’Shea’s aid, bringing him to a nearby flat and putting him under a cold shower to help soothe the pain. O’Shea suffered burns to his face and his chest but mercifully it is thought that he will not suffer any permanent scarring.

O’Shea, who hails from Baldoyle in Dublin and was based in the Kevin Street Garda Station, was held overnight in the Burns Unit in St. James’ Hospital.

He had arrived at the flat complex after receiving a call from a man who was refused entry to the complex having turned up to collect his daughter from the woman who threw the oil over O'Shea.

A resident of the flat complex who witnessed the incident told The Star: “A woman came down from the third floor, the entrance of the flats and suddenly flung the saucepan at the child’s father from a few feet away.

“But most of the cooking oil splashed on the Garda, on his body and face. He was screaming with the pain.

“Some of us pushed him into a flat and he tore off his shirt with the oil on it and we put him in the shower and turned on the cold water.

“Other Gardai arrived then and followed the woman and handcuffed her and took her away.”

The Nigerian man who was the target of the hot oil attack was also injured in the incident and was taken to St. James’ Hospital, but is not believed to have suffered any serious injuries.

Commenting on O’Shea’s injuries, Garda Representative Association President Damien McCarthy said: “This Garda suffered serious injuries but he’s very lucky they were not worse given the highly charged nature of the situation.

“We absolutely condemn the incident and wish the Garda a speedy recovery.

Hope so, but as I know people who needed skin grafts after getting scalded by boiling water, I fear he may need something similar. And if it's over a large area, I can't see the Garda being "back on the beat" any time soon.

    Best of luck to him.

That's the reality of police duty; you never know when you will be the victim of violence, and it can also be a lot worse that having severe burns, as terrible as they are. I hope the Garda recovers quickly and does not suffer permanent physical or mental scarring.

However, the newspaper article makes no mention of where the alleged perpetrator comes from. Which leads me to suspect that you are indulging in cheap xenophobic points scoring. It makes no difference where a person convicted of a crime comes from, as the punishment should be determined by the gravity of the crime and nothing else.:)

If that punishment can include deportation, then it does matter.

I do not believe that a court can impose a sentence that includes deportation in an assault case like this. However, the immigration authorities can decide to deport a person who is not a citizen and has been convicted of a serious offence.

If the person is from, say, Kerry, however, I don't believe he or she can be deported to there. Not, of course, that any Irish person could ever commit a vicious crime.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

If laws can be written over a weekend to save the banks, is it too much to ask that a criminal penalty which involves reversal of naturalisation be allowed in cases where naturalised Irish people commit serious crimes?
Yes, Irish born people commit heinous crimes and ought to be duly sanctioned;we have travellers battering each other with slash hooks and the punishment seems to be light; we have numerous cases of seroius crimes where the sentences appear to be too bloody light However, there is in this country, a seriously flawed immigration policy whereby anyone can come in without any questions asked.
I have spoken with Brazilians locally who pointed out a guy who lived here illegally for 3 years. He stabbed someone to death in his home town, and came here. What about the Polish guy who raped that woman in the toilets in Cork? He had raped someone in Poland.
I'd like to think that if you emigrate and take up citizenship in another country, you behave yourself. Is that too much to ask?

This story makes me sick and irate. I would love to go on but as its a live criminal case perhaps its best not to. Secondly look at the case that concluded in Belfast today, 4 years custody for throwing a block at a police woman. We really live in such a wonderful fcukin country.:mad::mad:

On second thought, I only mentioned Kerry because it came to mind as a county far from Dublin. I meant no disrespect to the county - where I have had some very enjoyable times - or its people. :):)

Hope it's true that he wont have any scaring, if there was no deep burns he should make a good recovery. The locals getting him into a cold shower quickly could have been key to limiting the damage, fair dues to them for acting quickly and coming to his aid.

Writing laws over the weekend is never a good idea, because it only leads to bad laws. Nor are Daily Mail-type kneejerk solutions to crime or totally inaccurate sweeping statements like "anyone can come in without any questions asked".

As I see it, this boiling oil case is sub judice and perhaps we'd better leave it to the court to decide what punishment is appropriate. :)

Jesus, thats awful, my wife was scalded years ago with cooking oil on the legs, very painful.

Hope he's getting the best treatment possible. As for that woman, theres something lacking to even think of throwin that at anyone.

Hope the judge comes down hard on her. No excuses.

Folks I'm real sorry, but for legal reasons I have to close this thread because the matter is sub-judice. I'll open it again when the case has been heard.

I've also had to delete some posts for the same reason.

This is an instruction straight from the top, so it's out of my hands.

    I hope you all understand.
