    Taupo is really nice, bit out of your way though!! hukka falls, which is only 5-10 mins from taupo town, definately worth a look!

    +1 for Taupo,the Tongariro National Park near there is also well worth a visit.

    raglan is nice for a bit of surfing.

    there is also the waitomo caves.

    stayed 3 nights in waitomo, not alot there to be honest, but was still one of the best stops we made, did the rubber tubing through the caves, that was good craic, went to curlys bar the rest of the time and met some great people, theres a rabbit farm there too it was closed though when we went!
    you might be able to visit the lord of the rings hobbit village in waikato/matamata, but i think they might be filiming the hobbit there now, so it could be closed.
    and the corromandel peninsula is a great spot if you have time to spare.
