Why I hate loaning out my car...

I let my dad borrow my car yesterday and he brings it back like this......



Having never kerbed a wheel in his life before he manages to do it to my front left.

Anyway, I am getting a new tyre in the morning and have two questions. The front two tyres were put on as a new pair and the tyre on the good side has about 5-6mm thread remaining. Would you change the other tyre as well as the damaged side? I have a bit of a phobia about having different tyres on the same axle but these tyres arent cheap either.

Secondly, does anyone know an alloy refurb place preferably near Limerick / Tipperary that could repair the damage to the alloy? That scratch will just annoy me over time as the rest of the alloys are immaculate.

You could swap the front and rear wheels if the rears are still reasonably fresh (not that I'd worry in the first instance).

That scratch should be easy enough to buff out if you have a rotary sander then touch it up with some clear coat. No need to bring it to a shop.

I doubt it will buff out as it is gouged a little bit. I'd rather get it done professionally. I have found a place near me called Wheeldoctor.ie who I will call i into tomorrow for an opinion.

It'll need to be filled or sanded back. Wheel doctor should be able to do it no problems, though they had a serious waiting list last time I checked!

If it was me i'd be getting 4 new tyre's cause daddy dearest would be footing the bill. If i had to take it in blood he'd pay.

That looks like a bit more than a kerbing, in fact that looks like its hit something at a fair clip.
I would be checking tracking as well TBH.

Anyone that knows me or my father would wet themselves if it was suggested i was spoiled. The reason i said i'd get him to get 4 new tyres would be next time he got a loan of the car he'd be more careful.

Sure you may as well make him buy you a whole new car at that rate!

he could have hit the kerb for any number or reasons, not out of carelessness either.

Bit of long term advice, don't be too sore on your auld lad. Mistakes can happen anyone. Just fix it up without mentioning too much and cut him some slack, as I'm sure he's done plenty for you in the past it's your opportunity to return him a favour.

He is insisting on paying for the tyre and I certainly am not going to make him pay for anything else. He is mortified enough about doing this! It could happen to anyone.

same here for my parents..my mother reversed into my car and it cost me €120 to get the bumper fixed..was letting them off with it but they insist on paying for it
I'm still gonna slag her for her crap driving skills though

I wouldnt worry about the difference in thread depth whatsoever. Thats a very minor thing in the larger picture. If you reeeeeeeeeeeeeally are worried though, you could put the spare on and use your brand new tyre as the spare.

Personally if it was me I would just get a new tyre and leave the alloy. The PO curbed all mine and I still have to get round to fixing them.

It's the only mark on any of the alloys and would drive me crazy looking at it so for peace of mind I will get it done.

Scrapyard is a bit over the top for this when a decent repair can be done.

Have to back up this. Most of us learned to drive in our dad's car, with dad as driving instructor and it was usually our dad's car that we first had use of to go to that disco/meet the bit of fluff/pick up the mates.

Anyone can have a kerbing even the most cautious of drivers.

It won't cost the earth to fix.

The wheel will turn and your 17 year old will be looking for the keys sooner than you think.

Last time I gave my car to my dad he filled it to the brim with fuel after I drove him somewhere so maybe that's where I'm coming from OP.

I have not seen my father since I was 15, he was not great father material, and even I would not do it to him...


As for topic it self: that's your dad... I would just tell him wtf old man! Then just replace the tyre and ask him to be more careful next time.

Loaning car to a friend. No freaking way! Newer ever! I will take you there myself if I can, but no freaking way you getting my car.

That was my intention but he would not take no for an answer. I am only taking his money for the tyre and nothing else. I'll just get him a bigger birthday present this year to pay him back a little without him feeling bad about it.

Anyway, I went to a tyre fitter this morning to get it replaced and they told me to would be fine to drive on as it is. I wasnt happy with that to be honest and got it changed as I would not fancy driving around with a big chunk missing from the sidewall.
