Commuting: Dublin city to IADT

    Hey folks,

I'm an incoming IADT student for DL245 Enterprise and I'm trying to figure out whether I should continue to live in Dublin city or move down to Dun Laghaoire.

Being 19/20, the city seems like a more.. fun place to be, but having taken the 46A from the Phoenix Park to the college was a little arduous. I couldn't see myself enjoying that at 7am to be in for 9 every day..

I'd love to hear what everyone else is doing, if there's an area or accommodation that anyone would recommend for living in the city but also shortening their commute. I was looking into getting a bike and taking the DART.

    Cheers!
    Enda

Generic disclaimer: I searched before I posted.

I've personally found that getting a DART from city centre can take almost as much time as the 46a as you're then getting a bus/cycling from Dun Laoghaire itself. If being within reach of town but also near college is a must, then your only real option is to find accommodation along the 46a route.

You might just have to choose between a long commute with easy city access or a short commute with a slog into town whenever you need/want to.

I've been doing Palmerstown to IADT for three years now! Even further than the Phoenix Park. To be in for 9am, I get the bus at 7.30. Honestly, I just got used to it. Found the trip home to be the worst after a long day.

If I had to choose between DL and somewhere closer to town, I'd go with the latter. If you plan on socialising at night in the city centre, you'll be broke from taxis.

The DART isn't close to the college, it's another bus or a long walk.

    46a is your man

bus from the city to straight outside it ...

if you were to get the dart you'd have to get the 46a back up to it (bout 10 mins from dart station)

Number 4 also goes as far as stradbrook roundabout, which is about a 10/15 min walk away if that's any use to you ?

    Anywhere along/near the 46A route.

Rathmines/Rathgar is fairly close to the 46A route and a 30 minute walk to the city centre.

I used to live in Dun Laoghaire (near IADT) and cycled into town (near Pearse St.) for work every day for about 18 months, you can do it in 30mins pushing yourself or 45min taking it easy but you'll need access to a shower either end. Not as bad as you think, just skip your morning shower and take one in the college, plus most people like to shower after work/college anyway so it's not any additional wasted time.

Best thing about cycling is there's no waiting!

Also think about the cost, add up all those return bus fares over the year and you've got yourself a very nice holiday for the summer. Another thing is fitness, you'll be fit as a fiddle within a month or two.
