OK guys, this is a thread looking for opinions on winches, primarily fitted to 4x4's

What are your experiences? which are good or bad?

    How to mount?

    12V vs 24V?

    Please give your opinions/experiences.

    Cheers.

Depends what you are using it for and how often, this got a lot of discussion yesterday at Crozier 4x4 open day

There's lots of generic Chinese winches out there for less than €500 that are fine for occaisional use. Otherwise the opininion is that TD-S Goldfish (will work under water), Warn (v expensive) and Superwinch are king of the heap.

Unless you're doing plant recovery, you need to add an extra €200 for Plasma rope, far easier and safer than wire rope to use. Unless you can fabricate your own, you need to add the cost of a winch bumper.

I have a Warn M8000 on my Defender that was a dealer fit but I've upgraded it with Plasma rope and an Albright contactor.

For sheer pulling power and speed with no danger of flattening the batteries, a decent hydraulic winch takes some beating.

Excuse my ignorance but what is plasma rope?

It's a lightweight nylon winch rope, plasma rope is a generic name for it. It floats, doesn't whip if it snaps and any you can knot it if it does.

One of the UKs main suppliers, he sells the rope as Dyneema bowrope - http://www.dborc.co.uk/goodwinch/
