Why is Youtube so slow no matter...

    ...which computer I use?

In Ireland, I had a 20ish mb connection.

In Korea I have a 50ish mb connection. In friends' apartments, I have other varying HIGH speed connections, but Youtube is alway slow.

    Why?

Anyone else experience the same thing?

    I don't think it's particularly slow.
You have to remember what it is and how big it is. Huge amounts of requests every seconds and they are transferring large files so it's bound to be a bit slower than say facebook, but I don't think it's too slow.

It's always a case of 'the weakest link' with the internet. There can be a long distance between your computer and and the server where you're downloading files from. The speed you ISP provides you with only covers the speed for a small portion of the journey. Usually there aren't problems with the middle bit, but if the server your connecting to only has a 1 Mbps connection then that's the max speed you're going to be able to download at no matter what your connection is. Youtube has amazing connections and farms full of servers of course, but when this potential is divided by millions if users (like a peak times) things can get pretty slow.

I've heard a lot of people recently talking about youtube getting slower, and that's probably just because they're getting even more popular. They're also hosting higher quality (HD) videos now than they used to a while back. If you're trying to watch videos on high quality then you're more likely to sit waiting for the red bar to move along. Try using lower quality settings. Note that if you go full screen, youtube automatically hikes up the quality, so you could watch for that too.
