English Premiership Football on Satellite...

...and some questions for Liverpool fans.

I had Sky TV for several years and added Setanta for a couple of years, but got rid of them about 2 years ago. I had Setanta because they showed plenty of Liverpool games. I haven't had any satellite TV since but want to sign up again for the new football season.

What would be the best combo for the premiership (especially for Liverpool games).

Sky Sports 1 on it's own - €19, forget the others, not worth it for the money.
Sky Sports 1 and 2 and get 3 and 4 free - €34 (IIRC there was little or no games on these channels).
Sky Sports 1 and ESPN - €31, don't know anything about ESPN, how are they for Liverpool games?
Sky Sports 1 and Setanta - €36, do they still load up on the Liverpool games?

Is it true that all new Sky boxes are now HD boxes?

Sky have the most games available to Irish viewers if you disregard the foreign broadcasters.Setanta show 3pm games every Saturday, don't bother with ESPN as they only have rights to 23 games so you might get to see about 3 Liverpool games max on that channel.

BTW. All new Sky boxes are HD ready and have Sky+ aswell

Foreign satellite can get you more games, try here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056097928

The past couple of years the number of Liverpool games been shown have reduced on all platforms. They just not winning that many games and they aren't classified as a top 4 team anymore (I'm a Liverpool fan BTW :))

Setanta show mostly Man U games. They have the 3pm games on a Saturday.

ESPN has a HD channel + 3 (I think) other channels. They have the 5pm game on a Saturday.

Even on Sky Sports they don't show many Liverpool games anymore. But at least they'll show Liverpool against the top 4 + Everton home & away.

Your best bet is just to get Sky Sports 1 IMO.

The problem with this is that in the last year or two, Sky started splitting the Premiership coverage between SS1 and SS2 whereas previously it was almost all on SS1

This means you have to take both channels (and the rest)

Thanks for the replies. Disappointing about the Liverpool games.

Another reason I was considering going back to Sky was for the Irish channels. Where I live, at the foot of a big hill, TV reception is dire. Analog terrestrial is unwatchable as is Freeview, so I don't have much faith that Saorview will be any better.

I watched a couple of online games but it's not the same for me.

Think I'll check out the foreign satellite forum. Are the foreign providers of premiership football legit? I'll check it out myself, but did I hear something about Sky trying to stop foreign TV stations broadcasting into the UK and Ireland.

Don't know if seeing them live is important but the Liverpool FC TV channel, sky 434, is free and shows most of the games the evening of the game at about 10pm

Success will bring more live games...you better hope Kenny does the business.

Just one point to add..... Last year setanta showed very few Liverpool games. This was mainly due to them taking part in the Europa league, and having their 3pm games rearranged for Sunday. This year should be better with them missing out on Europe.

Perhaps ask over on the foreign satellite forum also?

Pity the ppv option never started for season tv tickets for clubs. :(

The Dark Knight is right. There will be more games at 3pm on Saturday now that Europe is off the cards. Most of the games that are not at that time will be on Sky. (Unless ESPN or against Europa league opposition)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 515 ✭✭✭ZOLTAN28

I always find that if Man u play at 3pm on a saturday then setanta will show them - Liverpool would be next on the list - Setanta want to show the most popular teams in Ireland if they can.

As others have said they will be able to show Liverpool more this season as they will have more 3pm saturday kick offs.

I don't subscribe tosetanta as I am with Ericom and you get Setanta Ireland on Eircom.net as an Eircom customer - this is great for the 3pm games.

I don't subscribe to setanta as they are a complete Rip Off..... totally overvalued.
    - €15/month for Setanta 1 to UPC customers (who already get Setanta Ireland as part of their basic Pack)
    - €19.99 per month on Sky (I think)

I cannot see them surviing at these price points and current content (reruns of Top Gear and sports that's available on other channels FTA - F1, Rugby, Golf, etc).

Personally I can only see setanta surviving if they go Free to Air, and get more money from Advertising.
(It's probably only UPC money for Setanta Ireland that's keeping them solvent at the moment)

Appologies for the off-topic rant. To link it back onto topic, I don't think setanta are good value for money.

This is just not true and here are the amount of times that these six teams were shown on live TV over the last two seasons.

season 09/10 season 10/11 (not including Setanta)

    MU 24 + 26 = 50
    Liverpool 22 + 23 = 45
    Arsenal 23 + 22 = 45
    Chelsea 22 + 22 = 44
    Man City 22 + 19 = 41
    Spurs 20 + 17 = 37

Any Liverpool game sky covered was shown on sky sports 1 during 2010/2011 season.

Imo Espn is worse value for money than Setanta because at least Setanta have live football every Saturday at 3pm (be it premiership or fa cup). And Espn have way less premiership matches and no Europa league. Plus ITV get the pick of the Fa cup matches.

They also get the crap Scottish premier league matches aswell don't think they have shown a Glasgow derby or an Edinburgh one.

They are generally legitimate, but are not meant to be selling subscriptions to persons resident in the UK or Ireland. There is a High Court in England and Wales case at the moment, Murphy v Media Protection Services. This involved a private prosecution which was taken on behalf of Sky against a pub landlord who publically exhibited games on foreign broadcasters in her pub. She was convicted at the magistrate's court (same as the District Court here, more or less), appealed to the High Court by way of case stated, the appeal was dismissed on its substantive points but the High Court made an Article 264 reference to the ECJ about whether or not the prohibition of the sale of subscriptions outside the broadcasters target market was contrary to the freedom of movement for goods or services provisions of the EU Treaties. There is an advocate-general's opinion to say yes this is the case. If the Court rules with the Advocate-General you will possibly see sporting organisations having to sell rights on an EU-wide basis. Anyway that's still awaiting judgement.

The Dark Knight is right. There will be more games at 3pm on Saturday now that Europe is off the cards. Most of the games that are not at that time will be on Sky. (Unless ESPN or against Europa league opposition)

Bear in mind that no UK broadcaster can show games kicking off at 3pm on a Saturday. Setanta are limited to 1 of the Saturday 3pm games each week (and 1 Sunday 4pm game on the last day of the season).

ESPN's games are almost always (with a handful of exceptions) Saturday 5:30pm kickoffs. There isn't one every week, though.

I know this is the satellite forum, but most digital cable viewers get both Setanta Ireland and ESPN as part of their packages (Setanta is included in all UPC packages and ESPN in all but the very basic digital pacakge). If you really want to see all the Premier League games and you can get UPC, then a Sky Sports subscription via UPC would be a cheaper option than any satellite package.
Plus ITV get the pick of the Fa cup matches

Setanta generally have every FA Cup game ITV do, and more beside. They are genuinely the best station as regards breadth of coverage of the FA Cup. That's not to say the quality of their coverage is the best, though...

They also get the crap Scottish premier league matches aswell don't think they have shown a Glasgow derby or an Edinburgh one.

Glasgow derbies are specifically excluded from ESPN's SPL deal. Sky have them all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,709 ✭✭✭✭Cantona's Collars

ESPN have rights to only 23 live premier league games, not worth subscribing to for that.
Setanta pulled a fast one by showing a lot of games near the end of last season on Setanta 1 which isn't available free on UPC (they charge €15pm for it)
If it's an 'official' provider you want then go with Sky-no red button on UPC for highlights, match choice etc. This is a big no no for me with UPC as the red button option is pretty much essential these days.

S4C show live Welsh football on Saturday afternoons as the Welsh FA do not enforce a blackout period. Technically Sky if they wanted could bid for Premier League Saturday 3pm games and show them only in Ireland and Wales.

I was surprised by those figures. I would have guessed Liverpool had around 15 games live per season. I was also surprised to see Liverpool are on par with the top 4.

Must do a google before making any wild assumptions again! :)

Thread is about Premiership, not available live on FTA unfortunately.

TV3 commentary would put anyone off watching it.

"TV3 commentary would put anyone off watching it. "

    Never were truer words spoken.

Setanta did switch a few matches to Setanta 1 which stopped me being able to watch them through Eircom as they only give you Setanta Ireland like UPC.

IF I were you I would take Sky Sports and try and get deal on Setanta - I had it for 2.50 a month for a while last year.

As well as the best live matches Sky also have Football First on a Saturday evening which shows extended highlights of all the premier league saturday matches (except the ESPN one I think) and also shows La Liga - watching Barca every week is probably worth the subscription alone.

Well if its La Liga anyone is primarily interested in ,I suggest a subscription to Al Jazeera on 13e .100 euro per annum.
They show almost every La Liga match live with English commentary.
There is none of the red button nonsense or delayed coverage crap that Sky regularly pull.

Al Jazeera cannot be beaten for Serie A and La Liga. incredible coverage if those leagues are your thing.

You know exactly what I mean by foreign:rolleyes:

Like it or not Sky are the main pay tv platform for Ireland and in most peoples eyes are not considered 'foreign' by them.
There's even a Foreign Satellite forum here on boards (Sky isn't discussed there;))

I think that "Foreign Satellite" should probably be renamed to "Satellite - Advanced", or somesuch.

Its harder to acurately state what should go in each forum.

Foriegn Satellite was not one of the ICDG forums. It was started independently by a group who disagreed with the rule that you did discuss subscription satellite services who do not officially sell subscriptions in the UK and Ireland on this board.

Sky may be headquatered outside of the State. But there is a huge difference. It has purchased, on the open market, rights to broadcast programmes, including sporting events, in this State. The other foreign satellite providers have not.

How they address this issue is there own business and between them and their rights holders. However, the usual way they have agreed with their rights holders, is by not selling subscriptions outside of their target broadcast area.

So the divide between Satellite and Foriegn Satellite is:

    Satellite: Sky
    Freesat
    Saorsat
    Free to air satellite

Foreign Satellite: Foreign subscription services that do not market and are not meant to be selling subscriptions in this jurisdiction.

My view is this should stay the way it is. But if there are other views we can discuss.

In my experience Liverpool fans are connoisseurs of the beautiful game so would enjoy Champions League football even without their team's paricipation.

The club also have a rich history in the competition.

    Judging by the fixtures left, Setanta will probably pic the following;

    Saturday 13 August 2011 Liverpool v Sunderland

    Saturday 20 August 2011 Sunderland v Newcastle

    Saturday 27 August 2011 Chelsea v Norwich

    Saturday 10 September 2011 Stoke v Liverpool

Saturday 17 September 2011 Fulham v Man City

    Saturday 24 September 2011 Liverpool v Wolverhampton

Saturday 1 October 2011 Man Utd v Norwich

    Saturday 15 October 2011 Arsenal v Sunderland

    Saturday 22 October 2011 Arsenal v Stoke

Saturday 29 October 2011 Everton v Man Utd

Saturday 5 November 2011 Man Utd v Sunderland

Saturday 19 November 2011 Man City v Newcastle

Saturday 26 November 2011 Man Utd v Newcastle

Just to return to the OP's original question now that the TV fixtures to the end of November have been announced:

In that period, Liverpool have 13 games. 12 are on TV (7 Sky, 2 ESPN and 3 Setanta)

There is no cheap combination of channels to cover all these. However, there may be a way to minimise the cost. The Setanta matches are in August (1) and September (2) and I believe it's possible to sign up for a minimum 2 month sub. Also, both of the ESPN games are in October and it may be possible to upgrade for 1 month only (need to check this).

Saturday 19 November 2011 Man City v Newcastle

Saturday 26 November 2011 Man Utd v Newcastle

Not bad, I think you got all but one of them right... The actual list is:

Setanta Sports Live Barclays Premier League Games
    August 13 Liverpool v Sunderland 3pm
    August 20 Everton v QPR 3pm
    August 27 Chelsea v Norwich 3pm
    September 10 Stoke v Liverpool 3pm
    September 17 Fulham v Manchester City 3pm
    September 24 Liverpool v Wolves 3pm

    October 29 Everton v Manchester Utd 3pm
    November 5 Manchester Utd v Sunderland 3pm
    November 19 Manchester City v Newcastle 3pm
    November 26 Manchester Utd v Newcastle 3pm

No news whether they are Setanta Ireland or Setanta Sports 1. The general (but not quite always) rule seems to be if Manchester United or Liverpool are playing, the game is on Setanta Sports 1, otherwise it is on Setanta Ireland. But the game on the first day of the season is usually on Setanta Ireland.
