Suggestions for joining an athletics club

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice, and thought that perhaps this forum would be a good place to start. When I was in school I was heavily involved in athletics, training 5 days a week with my club, I pretty much thought about nothing but running. When I went to college, however, it was the usual story; a lack of time combined with a string of injuries meant that I was running, at most, 10-20 miles a week. Work and a permanent move to Dublin (where I've now lived for 10 years) followed college, and being away from my club meant that it was all too easy to stop running altogether.

Recently I've gotten back into training and have even done a couple of road races (Dub half marathon - 1:23, Dub full marathon 2:58). I'd forgotten how much I enjoy training/competing. The problem is that I have nobody to train with. My girlfriend and I do occasionally get out for a couple of miles, however, when I mention 60 minutes of pyramid fartlek you can imagine the response I get :).

As such, I'm looking at joining a club here in Dublin, I just really want to start training with other people again. I live in Milltown but work in Blanch. Could anyone recommend a club that might be suitable?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and please excuse how much this post sounds like a personal ad.

    For fun and maybe more,
    someyoungfella

There's a list of clubs in this thread, a few posts in. I don't know which would be closest to you - UCD? DSD? Sportsworld?

Your closest club would be either DSD or Crusaders. UCD I is seasonal (college runners) so there is no one really around during the summer and would be more designed for students so very few marathon runners (think the odd Tri guy has done one but thats it). Rathfarnam may also be an option for you. From work point of view Donore or MSB or Liffey Valley are options for you also situated by Phoenix park)

Crusaders and DSD train on the polo grounds on saturday in the phoenix park and crusaders as well on tuesday in irishtown. Serious mix of athletes in Crusaders from elite to beginners (there much better for a competitive guys side though where as DSD dominates over them in the girls) and same in DSD. There both really friendly and approachable as well so which ever is closer would be my answer.
