Hi.... it's along story... anyway I said i would help as the last fella 'left town ' in a hurry and the club has no idea where it stand. I have an accountancy background and so know my way around debits and credits etc.

Question 1: Are GAA/ Soccer/ Rugby clubs able to claim VAT on their expenses??? As I suppose this will be a major cost to carry on Kits, Buses etc.

Question 2: Do they need an Annual Audit etc and submission to Collector General??

Sorry for the questions... the club is only 1-2 x year in operation and the current committee not up to speed on financial regulations.

Anyone who has experience of running such clubs who can give advixe would be appreciated.

    Hi Masala,

The answers to your questions are no you cannot claim back the VAT on any expenses as the club is not registered for VAT. For tax purposes clubs are treated as a chartiable organization but they are not VAT registered. Therefore you do not have to make any annual submission to the collector general.

There is one way that I now of to reduce your costs as regards hiring buses for example. If your clubs sponsor is VAT registered get them to book the buses and then charge the club the cost of the bus less the VAT as the club sponsor can claim back the VAT.

I hope this helps, any other questions I'll happily help you if i can.

    Good morning Masala.

In answer to your second question, if the club is registered as a charity you will need to supply annual accounts to the charities section of the Revenue Commissioners. I am not sure if clubs per se, not registered as a charity, are obliged to submit accounts. Your County Board may be able to help you.
