I am bringing a car in and the first registration date on the V5 is 1st August 1981.

Does anybody know precisely when does the 30 year rule apply? Is it on the precise date of 30th anniversary or the 30th year? In which case if the latter and I bring it in next few days then its the vintage regime? If the former then the car is 29 years old and then a 90% reduction of VRT but with a minimum of €700 payable?

Is this correct anybody know? I may not make Terenure on Sunday!!

I saw this on the revenue site. Does this mean I wonder that I book an appointment within the next week for up to 30 days hence which would have me ok then? In practice I am compliant?

    What is VRT?
Vehicle Registration Tax is chargeable on the registration of a motor vehicle in the State. All motor vehicles in the State, other than those brought in temporarily by visitors, must be registered with the Revenue Commissioners. A vehicle must be registered before it can be licensed for road tax purposes and a State resident is not, save in exceptional circumstances, allowed to drive an unregistered vehicle.

    When must I register?
In order to register an unregistered vehicle (or one previously registered outside the State) you must make an appointment with the NCTS within 7 days of its entry into the State to have a pre-registration examination of the vehicle carried out. You must complete the registration process and pay VRT at the NCTS Centre within 30 days of the arrival of the vehicle in the State. Further details of how to book the examination are available on the NCTS website at www.ncts.ie/vrt.html.

This one. Can you hold off until after the end of this month? They will want to see some proof of date of importation....

What's the vrt do you know? Also this means that it's on normal car tax until 31 years?

i think the vrt has gone up from €50 to €200 lately on cars over 30 years.

    Sure has.

Also according to the nice lady in Arklow NCT center a valid MOT cert is not needed for imports and no inspection is necessary on a vintage car.

I don't know if that applies everywhere though

I would hold fire and import it after it becomes 30 years old. (e.g from Date of First registration anywhere in the world.)

Don't know what you're on about with the 90% reduction , as that has nothing to do with cars. Just motorcycles over 10 years old.

Import it now and expect to pay at least (if not more) that €720. Import it after 1st August and pay €200. It's a "no-brainer" really.

^ As macplaxton says its €200 after 01.08.2011 or a minimum of €720 now. The car could cost a lot more to import depending on its percieved value.

You will also have to go through an NCT and do it annually as its a post 1980 registration.

Post 1979, to be pedantic... or for ultimate clarity.

Any 30 year old+ car (or veh-ic-le, if you prefer) first registered later than 31-12-1979, although it will will qualify for very cheap tax, will still have to be NCT'ed.

All, many thanks for your replies.

Will defer all until next month so as to keep the costs down.

Thanks again for clarifying for me.
