Is there a maximum luggage allowance on long haul flights, even if willing to pay?

I am emigrating to oz soon, and i need to bring a couple of suitcases and I was also hoping to take my bike. My work will pay for an addtional 20kg on top of the normal flight allowance (20 -23kg depending on the airline). My question is though, is there an absolute ceiling on the amount you can bring, i.e. if I turn up with 80kg worth of stuff, can they so no, even if i am willing to pay for it?

I'm not sure if there's a limit as to how many suitcases you can bring if willing to pay, but I think I read somewhere that no suitcase can be over 32kg!

Best thing to do would be to ring your airline(s) or whoever you booked the flight with and ask!

it will be in the "terms and conditions" of your contract with the airline - generally it is cheaper to book bags in before you turn up......:)

Emirates give you 30KG in Economy but it is very expensive once you go over that limit. However when you were booking that ticket you'd want to be sure it was a single itinerary from Ireland otherwise Aer Lingus could crucify you if you took a single flight from Ireland to the UK and then onwards with Emirates; also its much easier at heathrow as your bags are checked through onwards from Ireland so you don't have to reclaim them and checkin again!

Check your flight costs carefully because when you fly on Business you get a 40KG limit, as you your work will be paying extra it may work out better for yourself if you could get them to pay the difference between an economy ticket and business class which would give you another 10KG and an even better flight experience. Flying 1st class would give you 50KG but would probably cost close to €10k and for transporting stuff to Oz this sort of money would be better spent on shipping a container or two of stuff over.

If you do fly Emirates make sure you book the Airbus A380 as it is a vastly superior aircraft and if you could get bumped to Business class you'd be laughing all the ways to Oz, the A380 in business or 1st class is the the epitome of travel.

The 20KG excess allowance your work would pay for would cost them GB£560/€630ish which might go along ways to upgrading to Business class.

Avoid Malaysian Airlines and Cathay Pacific as I have heard of people getting badly stung by them for excess luggage.
