Tyres to replace sessantas

Im looking for 2 rear tyres. I found Vredestein ultrac sessantas to be stunningly good but the price compared to when I bought them before is making me look around again. Including fitting, buying them from camskill will now cost me €370 for 2.
The suit the rear of my car particularily well though. I need strong sidewalls and it seems to me assymetric tyres tend to have a stronger outer sidewall that directional tyres which obviously have 2 identical sidewalls.
Anyone have any suggestions under €150 per tyre. 245/40/18.

    Falcon 452s

Strong side wall, I used them on a track day. Excellent in the dry, in the wet still good. I picked them up at about 70 a piece from camskill.

    How heavy is your car?

Contact alloy-wheels.ie for pricing on the sessantas. Just put them on my M3 and they were cheaper than camskill.

    Try this guy

    Mc Quaid Tyres
    Gortakeegan
    Monaghan, Co. Monaghan
    047 84488

He's a distributor for Vredestein so is usually the cheapest for them

Its not particularily heavy, Audi A5 1.8T. Its very sensitive in relation to turn in on the rear tyres. I run with soft walls on the front end for a number of reasons however if I stick them on the back, the car is nothing short of dangerous with the back unstable in all conditions.

Thanks. Does he send them out? He is too far from me.

The sessantas have gone up an awful lot in the last year.

I don't know what size you are after, but for mine (225/40/18) the sessantas are 137 euro a corner fittes from alloy-wheels.ie

Edit. for your size they are 170 euro a corner fitted.

Yes I just saw that. They are cheaper than getting them from uk and paying fitting here.
What are they like to deal with? Likely to knock a few quid off?

Given that I recently paid €195 per tyre for 2 225/50/17 I would have thought €170 ea for 254/40/18 was a bargain. I any case if I was in a position to drive an A5 1.8T with that type of alloy I wouldn't be too concerned about an extra €20 - €30 per tyre. I would have though quality would be paramount to keep her between the ditches:)

Are you sure? I told him I was a member of that site, but he still quoted me the same prices as he has listed on his site...

I recently put Potenza S001s on my 4 wheels and I am mighty impressed with them. Maybe be very expensive in that size though. They were €140 per corner for 225/45/17.

Im looking for good tyres, not looking for cheap crap. IMO the sessantas are top top quality, better wet weather grip too than the factory fit michelin pilot sport 2 IMO. Its just that the sessantas have gone up alot (due to demand no doubt).

How do you think one gets into the position of driving a certain car? Its not by throwing away 20 or €30 euro randomly:D:D

Im heading to Dublin next weekend hopefully. Will see if alloy-wheels.ie will drop alittle from 170 to nearer 150 a tyre. That would be a good price on them.
What size are you looking for?

Head to discount tyres in Blanchardstown (Vredstein dealer).

I recently put sessantas on the front (225/40/18) for €280 total including fitting and disposal of old tyres.

More power to your elbow on the A5. At least I know that I can easily afford the tyres .. now its a case of putting aside the extra €20 to 30 and maybe I will be able to afford the car:D The only problem I would have with the 1.8T is the extra cost of fuel over a diesel .. but I suppose that depends on mileage

Bty how are those sessantas on snow/ice? I live on a road with a nasty 'pull' right at the end and normal summer tyres simply can't get up the hill. Are the sessantas any better than michelins/bridgestones or is it a case of simply putting winter tyres on some steel rims and put them on whenever there is snow?

I hate the idea of throwing away €20 a tyre to change betwwen summer to winter and back again .. would be better off paying once off for steel rims and have tryes ready whenever they are needed.

Nothing special in the snow in my size anyway but I got by fine with them and I live under a hill.
Better buy a set of winters though and a set of steel wheels.

had 4 ultrac sessantas last winter - NOT good in snow and ice at all I found - due to the unusual (but great looking) pattern. great in dry and very good in wet though.

+1 for the goodyear Eagle F-1 Asymmetrics more or less the same price as sessanta and better performance by a longshot.

I tried continentals, falcons and vredsteins on my M3 and the F1's were the best for wet & dry grip and durability.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,791 ✭✭✭JJJJNR

Victor where are you getting F1's at that price.

I have heard great things about the F1s but are they not €40 or €50 more expensive a corner than the Vredesteins?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 214 ✭✭spunk_monkey

where would be the cheapest place to get the F1s in south dublin? 225/40/18

It seems alloy-wheels.ie may not be doing vreds anymore, they are no longer listed on their site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 214 ✭✭spunk_monkey

    Pirelli P Zero Rosso 225/40/18

Is the above tyre a good one? For a mkv gti? Would it be rated as good/better than the F1s or Vreds? Can be had for 145 a corner fitted-good price?

    Cheers

Eagle F-1's are the best tire on the market, the Ultrac Cento looks like a better match, I found the sesanta's a bit noisey and unstable.

ok thanks, 2 questions if you can help:

1.EAGLE F1 Asymmetric /EAGLE F1 GS-D3....Is there are real difference between these two variants of the F1 or are they both good?

    2. is 150 a corner a good price?

    Thanks

Wow, that would keep my Panda in brand new tyres for the next ten years, and still leave me enough change for a 24 cans of Carlsburg. I'll drink to that !

I wouldn't put lexani tyres on an Audi A5. No way. A cheap proper brand would be my minimum but I'd go for a premium tyre mtself.

I would usually go for good middle of the road Tyre but this car is very fussy on tyres. Ive tried lots of tyres on it and basically if it doesnt have a pretty decent sidewall, the car is terrible.

And no, I don't wish I was driving a panda.
Horses for courses I guess. I would prefer to buy petrol than a pile of cans.

I would prefer to buy very little petrol and have no need for cans at all.
Much more challenging, skilful and satisfying.
It's also great when you don't have to switch you car off at the pumps in order to get her to fill up. ;)

Great idea there spend 50k on a new Audi and put 70 euro tyres under it..

I think any idea of anything was long gone once €50,000 was needed for a car, and any road car that needs €70 per tyre is badly designed and a waste of money and metal in the first place.

Bob your in the motors section, the majority of us love our cars and see them as being more than transport from A to B.

If you see your car as only as for transport fair enough but try to understand that not everyone else sees cars as this

On the contrary I am obsessed with cars, but I've moved full circle. I now see the clear mathematical beauty of efficiency, which is the art of engineering. I don't do herd mentality. I'm just offering an alternative view.
