What is the best way to copy everything from a pc to an external drive, and then what is the most effective way to wipe the pc clean?

The best way to copy everything is to use the command terminal - Start, Run, cmd and hit Enter....

Use the command 'xcopy' with the flags /e /c /h /i so that it copies hidden files and ignores errors etc. I'm not 100% sure on the syntax but a quick google should sort you out.

As for wiping the PC just use your Windows OS disk to reinstall the operating system if that's what your intention is.

If your intention is to securely wipe the HD so previous data is irrecoverable you might want to use something like DBAN
