Does anybody know if a vodafone booster would work for an o2 phone?

No. It's not a booster, it creates a small vodafone network cell in your home using a fixed broadband connection.

so basically you help expand vodafone's network and pay for the privelege of getting the cell and also to use it as well as supplying them the backhaul for free

    brilliant

It's up to you whether you want to purchase it or not. You could lobby VF for better reception or just switch networks.

There are some houses that simply won't allow mobile signals through due to construction materials, insulation, location etc. Nothing the networks could do would improve so a sure signal would be of benefit here.
