    Hi All,

I've been unsuccessfully trying to find in the census the breakdown on religious affiliation - would anybody be able to point me in that direction?

I'm intrigued to see if the numbers of those claiming religious affiliation have dropped.

Thanks in advance for any help/info on this.

I don't think it has been released yet. The numbers out yesterday were preliminary ones for population only.

I heard something about the individual breakdowns (rather than simply the number of people who had their details entered) not being available 'till next year.

I hope I'm wrong it seems a long time.

Yesterday's numbers for the population were based on a preliminary census. The actual census numbers won't start being released until April next year.

    Ah right - thanks!

That would, of course, explain why I couldn't find it!

I thought the process was automated.

    apparently there's a lot of manual error-handling and cross-checking.
there's hundreds of millions of data points involved.

I thought the process was automated.
Don't forget where there's a box "Other" - that will have to be processed manually.

Not to mention all the non-religious ticking "catholic". :pac:

Process is automated however where people have ticked the boxes incorrectly and their writing is 'not the best' shall we say the forms will have to be done manually.

They may need to call in a specialist to review mine. I put the line in the box for No Religion. My father then put an X through that and put the line in Catholic. But if you make a mistake on it, you're supposed to fill in the box completely, not put an X in it. So I filled in the Catholic box, made the single line in No Religion more definite, put an X through the word Catholic (or Roman Catholic, whatever it was), and put a tick mark beside No Religion.

Is there any forum or facility for public feedback on the census? I was disappointed in the wording of the religion question.
To my mind it would lead to more accurate results if the question read something along the lines of "Do you practice a religion? (Yes or no option)" followed by "If you ticked Yes please select from the list below" with the same choices as before.
It was confusing to have the "none" option at the end of all the other choices and I suspect many people ticked "other" before realising there was a "none" option.

^^ That horse has long bolted.

I imagine there'll be a high enough proportion of weirdness on the religion question this time round, with things crossed out and re-filled in and changed for the census people to release a "please don't fill out other household members' answers" ad next time.

Has anyone a site for the numbers of the last census?

"No religion" was at 186,000, up 34.6% from 2002 though.
I'd imagine a significant majority of those would be atheist.

And interestingly though they'd probably deny they are atheists due to constant strawmen definitions and misunderstanding of what an atheist is.

Of course we know there's a massive difference between being atheist and being a person who is not religious and doesn't believe in god :)
