Connecting PC to XLR Speakers

Just wondering if anyone could help me with this.

I have a set of Genelec 8020Bs which I use with a squeezebox duet using an male rca to female xlr cable. But I'm interested in being able to connect them directly to my pc.

    This is my motherboard.

I only have a standard 3.55mm output from the pc. I thought about getting a soundcard but was told they're not worth it.

I'm just wondering about what's the best way to connect the pc to the speakers. Is there a 3.55mm to xlr adapter that I can get? Will that even work? Or should I get an external/internal soundcard to run the speakers?

    Thanks for any help!

There's a couple of ways to do this.
The cheap and nasty way is to get a 3.5 mm plug (or a lead with the plug already on it) and some extra single conductor shielded wire, enough to go to each speaker, and 2 male XLRs. Connect the shielded wire to pins 1 (ground) and 2 (+ signal) on the XLRs. Other ends of shielded wire to the left & right on the jack plug. Crude but it does work. I doubt if you can get the cables for this method pre-made.
The proper way is to get an internal or external soundcard with "balanced" outputs and appropriate cables. M Audio do one as I'm sure other brands do too. I'm not certain on what connections are used, probably female to male XLR.
The cards are not expensive and is the recommended method for good reasons.
