Social Welfare Advice Please

I am an Irish citizen through parentage, having lived in Scotland all my life. Decided to come to Ireland to work, but have been unable to get an interview let alone a job since I came six weeks ago.

Finally got my PPS number, and might need to apply for Social Welfare as my savings are running out. Problem is that I am staying with a friend, who doesn't want me applying for Social Welfare as it might cause the taxman to investigate the owners of the house.

Thus, if i apply for Social Welfare without applying for Rent Allowance, would the owners of the house be contacted and maybe billed? Or is Social Welfare a totally seperate payment which doesn't involve much investigation?

    Many thanks.

So you're renting a room? Is your friend related to the owner? Is the friend the landlord?

Your friend the landlord who lives with you can earn up to 10k a year tax free in rent
Does he earn less then this a year in rent? If so, no issue

When you apply for JSA you need proof of address and the inspector will do an interview with you and call around for a home visit.

Your friend has no business telling you not to apply. What does he expect you to live on or pay the rent while you're on the job hunt?
Not much of a friend realy

Rent allowance is separate and a different application.
Just apply for the JSA now

You can apply for Job Seekers Allowance (welfare) without applying for Rent Supplement. The two are separate, probably because they like to make everything as awkward as possible, and also this way more public servants get to keep their jobs.
You will still need a proof of address however when applying for JSA. This shouldn't affect the house owners I don't think.

Would strongly recommend that you waste no more time or savings before going into a Citizens Information office and getting full info about how you have to prove habitual residence in Ireland in order to qualify for any social assistance payments such as Jobseekers Allowance, Supplementary Welfare Allowance etc. On the basis of what you have written you are unlikely to qualify.
