I don't think it's worth spending €500 on to be honest. I got it "free" with a contract and it's a nice phone but the novelty wares off in three weeks after that it's the same as any phone.

Can I just ask what's your average bill?

LG Optimus 7. It's €159 at the moment over in Bargain Alerts forum. I've only ever met one person who bought an iPhone without a contract, and he was an idiot.

I had an old iPhone 3g, it was a great phone, but not worth near what the pre-pay price for it was. (I got it as my dad let me have his upgrade.)

It's a top piece of tech , I would be lost without it .

Use a lot of apps for sports , games, betting , sat nav watching sky tv,

Now you can do all that stuff on android also but IMO the iOS software feels a lot more polished and more simple to use , but you may also get users who prefare android.

    Personal preference really .

Oh I would not pay 500-600 for an unlocked version at the moment , there is a new model due in the coming months so I would either wait for that one or till the price drops on the 4

Don't buy one now. Apple will most likely be releasing an iPhone 4S/5 in August/September and when they do, you'll regret buying the iPhone 4 as you'll want the newer model so I say you wait if anything.

I have one on PAYG and love it. I'm thinking of changing to a Samsung Galaxy S II though. :)

I'm prepay with vodafone & it works out great! I top up €30 per month & get free texts to any network & free internet. Most of my friends have iPhone's so I can call them using Skype/Viber. Very addictive but I'd be lost without it! Ipod, facebook, news, games... :) My friend is bill pay with O2 and isn't very happy! They are bringing out the iPhone 5 soon though

I certainly wouldn't pay €580 for one... best bet is to either get someone's unwanted upgrade on gumtree.ie or try some of the mobile shops around town. Expect to pay €400-€450.

I paid €430 a couple of months ago for my factory unlocked jailbroke one in immaculate condition and I absolutely love it. €20 a month for free texts to any network and free internet (til September then it's going back to €30), no contract, free apps, and a lot of fun for the more adventurous to be had out of Cydia.

Reason for me not opting for 3's offer is personal nightmarish experiences customer-service wise with them on a contract a few years ago and on the €40-a-month deal after VAT the min bill is about €49 and I know I would never spend that much on credit. Plus being unable to unlock or jailbreak the phone would be a big dealbreaker for me personally.

With regards the Iphone 5 I'd expect for the first year you won't rise a sim-free/ contract-free example for less than €700+ so unless you're a serious gadget junkie then the 4 will be more than sufficient to meet your needs. Like the 3GS did with iOS 4, the 4 will run iOS 5 anyway, so apart from HD recording and a better camera it's questionable what exactly the new one will offer to demand that sort of an outlay

€40 is including VAT on 3.

The iPhone 4 is crazy money if not signing up to a contract. Would you not purchase a 3gs instead, they are just as good, if not for the screen the are identical phones, function wise.

Mine is for sale, check my signature.

There's double the RAM and a more powerful processor in the iphone4. There is a noticeable difference in performance compared to the 3GS.

I'd hold out for the new phone, coming in September. If you must get an iPhone now though, the 4 is an excellent model. Prepay prices are ridiculous though

I would not touch an iphone 4 after the called failed issues I had with mine. I really loved my iphone 4 until I got the Samsung Galaxy SII and imo the Samsung is a much better phone in every way.

Buying it as a prepay phone is much better than going for billpay. I got mine with O2, it cost me something like €200 and a €45 monthly contract for 18 months.

If you buy it prepay then you will spend around €20 a month.

I'm thinking of buying one this weekend, not going prepay, I can't afford the €500 outlay.

Of the bill pay options I was thinking of going with 3 as they have unlimited data, plan is €40pm. I have heard a couple of people complain about the coverage, I know someone who had to stop using the 3 WiFi as the coverage and customer service from them was awful. Anyone use 3 here or do most for with O2 / Vodafone?

There's a long thread in the three forum on boards.ie with lots of people complaining that something is wrong with using an iPhone 4 on the three network.

I have a 3GS on Vodafone, and the coverage is pretty poor as well. I think I have a 2GB limit per month, but the coverage is way too poor to use more than a tiny fraction of it. Plus they charge extra to use it as a modem for another device.

Thanks for that, after spending a while reading that forum and it's really put me off going with three.

The amount of data offered by o2 and vodafone is pretty small (250mb and 500mb) on there cheapest plans. Not sure how much I would use just browsing for an hour or 2 most nights and downloading the odd youtube video / music from itunes. I don't really want to pay €60pm with O2 to get 1gb each month but it's looking like my best option at the moment!

Faster processor, better camera, Retina display, front facing camera for facetime/etc.
3GS wont have all the features in the new ios5 and I'd say will be dropped from ios5 support by early next year.
you'd be mad to buy a 3GS unless its second hand for use as pay as you go.
