I'm looking at importing a 2.2 litre diesel avensis which is February '08.
Will the road tax on this be:
    CC based- €830
    or emmissions based- €430 :D

    Emissions based.

Tax is emmissions based and it's tax band D - €447.

On a side note, not the most reliable engine that 2.2 D-4D, prone to head gasket problems.

+1, this has been done to death at this stage.

And a +1 on bazz's point, the 2.2 D-4D is far from the most reliable engine out there.

I thought the cut off point was car registered after July '08 no?

Was later amended to start of 2008. Then its a choice of the cheaper CC or Emissions based system

So if you're importing a car registered between Jan 2008 and start of July 2008, you can choose to be on either CC based emissions or Co2 based emissions?

This may have been done to death so apologies but I was of the understanding that if you were importing a car registered after 1st Jan 08 then it was emmissions based with no choice on the matter. Again irrelevant for the most part unless you were importing a large engined petrol car.

I heard that they have extended the warranty for such problems. Not sure though. cant seem to find any info on it though on the website.

This is NOT completely correct, it was only people who bought a brand new car between January and June 2008 that could choose between engine capacity and CO2.

Anyone importing a 08 car must pay tax on CO2, regardless of which system is cheaper.

    Unless its a t180 I wouldn't bother with the 2.2
    The 150 isn'tmuch better than the 2.0

When I brought two cars in during 2009 I am sure we were offered (by the revenue guy) to join the cheaper of the 2 systems... for us it was CO2 though as it happens.. but I will take you word for it.

Interesting, what I said is what is supposed to happen though, clearly I forgot that this is Ireland for a moment:)!

The green party are gone and the imf are not happy with our current road tax system.expect big changes with regards a two tier system
