    Hi,

Realistically, how must could I expect to get for 2003 mondeo zetec 1.8i
petrol, hatch back, silver, 156k miles, in fine driving condition, NCT til Feb 2013 with 4 new tyres and body is in good shape for mileage/year.

I'm getting the equivalent of 1200 on a trade in.

I checked carzone, but wanted to see what might be realistic price based on
    experience here.
Would I get any better price or what might options be?

    Would appreciate any input.

A trade in value is a bit of a misconception, what you should really view is the cost to change meaning how much cash you have to part with along with your car.

You would be much better off selling privately and i'll try and explain why. Say a dealer has a car for sale for 6k which is costing him 4.5k. If i go in with cash and do a bit of haggling i might get the car for 5.6k leaving the dealer with 1.1k profit.

Now say you go in with your mondeo and get 1.2k off the price, the dealer has still made a profit of 300 and he has your car standing him nothing so whatever he sells it for is pure profit. Now taking a guess that you could have got 400 off for dealing in cash, the true value of your car is only a paltry 800 when you could potentially sell it privately for 2k give or take.

Privately you'd be doing well to get €1800 for it, as a trade in it's worth very little.

It's a hatchback in a market that prefers saloons, and it's got 156k on the clock, which to the average person who knows SFA about cars means it's been to the moon and back (people seem to have this irrational belief that the second a car passes 100,000 miles it will automatically explode) so I think it's fair enough for an eight year old car, especially one as common as a Mondeo.

thanks for replies. funny, I totally prefer hatch, so many manufacturers manage to screw up what should be a reasonable task to design and create a good looking boot

so is the consensus, take what I get....?

    thanks.

Depends, how much is the car they are offering you €1200 for the Mondeo against.

Or if the car you're trading it against isn't very good. What's the car OP?

stick it up on donedeal / adverts a wee bit lower than similar mondeos if you want to get a quick sale

the dealer is more likely to haggle a bit more in a straight sale

    Car I'm looking at is a lexus IS220D, 2007 asking price 15,000.
    So 13,800 with my mondeo.

    Consider buying one privately?

That's not a great deal really. Did you ask them how much is the Lexus for a straight sale? Those IS220Ds like the diesel too.

In reality the dealer is giving you feck all for the Mondeo because that is what it is worth to him. With that mileage he is not going to sell it on for much as he could not afford to offer a warranty on it in the event something failed at that mileage. He is just fudging the figures around to make it look like you are getting a great deal.

Here are two asking alot less:

Take the Mondeo out of the equation and go in and negotiate a straight deal on either of these cars. These cars cost almost €900 to tax per year meaning they are not shifting off forecourts that quick, should be lots of scope for a discount.

Sell the Mondeo privately cheap, even if you got under €1k for it overall I bet you will end up with a better deal than you are currently getting by trading it in.

The IS220d is supposed to have quite a poor engine and in particular the gearing is meant to be all over the shop, the one thing I do know is that these engines are prone to head gasket failure, and are not as reliable as one would expect something with a Toyota/Lexus badge on the bonnet to be.

squod, nice looking car, and the one I'm interested in is very similar.

thanks to comments on the board here, I'm now beginning to question myself!! ;-)
lovely car but plenty of issues to read about on the web.
or one could just be lucky and get one with no problem.

Would you mind sharing your personal experience?

thats interesting. the car I'm looking at though as half the mileage on these and comes with 1yr full warranty for parts and labour.
so that is worth something I guess, for peace of mind at least.

You are paying for that 1 year warranty peace of mind in his higher asking price. ;)
