as a generalisation what cover would TP and TPFT give you were you to have an (own fault) accident and get seriously injures or enmired in Legal proceedings.? Would I be correct in believing you would need comprehensive to get legal and medical expenses paid?

Its a common misconception that if you have comp cover you are covered for your own injuries or legal expenses as a result of a crash where you are involved in a single vehicle incident.

    This is not the case.

A general rule of insurance is that you cannot claim off yourself.

Now some companies offer extra cover for things like legal expenses (max Ive seen is 5k) or personal injuries/medical expenses (max Ive seen has been 1k) as additional or optional benefits on a comp policy but in general you arent covered at all for them.

So of course a TPO/TPFT policy wont cover you either.

    None.

I've never had anything but 3rd party f&t, well except for when I had a company car, I presume that was comp.

    I do have VHI though.

so if you damage yourself you would have no cover for legal and medical in the normal run of things. Thats what I was musing about. thanks for the answers.

SO the extra you get with Comprehensive would really just be to cover damage to your vehicle if you crash it yourself.

I can't think of a reason why you would require legal cover after damaging yourself really in a one car own fault situation. I may well be completely on the wrong train of thought though.

You can't sue yourself for crashing your own car

Own Damage or "Single Vehicle Accident" could also involve a house or a wall etc.... This is where legal cover would be handy.

    OP

Third Party (very rare nowadays) is about a step above the legal requirement of the Road Traffic Act.

It WILL cover you for any legal proceedings brought by a Third Party etc etc...

You can when obtaining a quote from your insurer, request "Personal Accident" Insurance. This is not a liability policy as your car insurance would be but would be more of a "Benefit Policy" Quite like Windscreen cover or breakdown assistance.

With Personal Accident, in the event of injury, loss of limbs, death etc etc then you will be compensated a certain amount specified within the policy for no more than 104 usually with a 4 week excess. Obviously if you die, it will be a bulk payment to your next of kin.
