Bought 3 broadband today, what to do with Sky Multiroom and phone line...

Just before I start, I did search the forum and didn't get the answers I was looking for...

I have bought 3 mobile broadband today to replace eircom, and have eircom disconnected, but its not disconnected yet. And they need 30 days notice.

It will save me around €70 a month! But after getting home, we seems to have made a slight oversight. Biggest problem is, we have Sky in 2 rooms, at the minute they are connected to the phone line, and have been for a couple of years...

So whats the verdict, surely sky can verify that the 2 boxes are at the same address some other way... Or is there a better Digital service provider now that doesn't need a phone line? I'm a bit stuck, as the 3 broadband is an 18month contract...

You could go with a voip provider like Blueface to supply you with an ATA and a local number but the call quality over mobile BB would be terrible. There is also the problem with the Sky modem not being able to 'talk' over voip.

Best thing to do is save even more money by ditching the Sky multiroom and replacing the extra box with a free to air box for a once off payment.

Ive only ever found the need to connect phone line when there was an issue.

My sky + was disconnected for 2 years from phone line...

Unless sky contact you about not having a phoneline connected then don't worry about it.

If they do simply tell them you have UPC phone, they are unreliable when it comes to callbacks.;)

    That won;t wash with sky.

They hit me for an extra €60 per month as they coould not verify that both boxes were at the same physical address. I tried everything but they would not nudge the only way was to get the eircom line reinstated and then ensure both boxes were connected.

It's in the multiroom T&C's so you will eventually get caught.

The cheapest and easiest solution is to cancel Sky multiroom when they come chasing you.

Currently you need a phoneline to verify the location if the boxes. There is no other way.

Blueface over 3 mobile "broadband" is unlikely to work, or if it does it'll be unreliable. It's not worth having for the purposes of Sky callbacks only.

Blueface or any other VOIP over 3G Mobile will not work well enough for analogue modems or regular fax machines. Even with UPC or Digiweb, it's their own "in network" VOIP that's good enough for modems and faxing, using 3rd party VOIP over public internet is less reliable.

No mobile provider can provide Broadband. You need good quality broadband for Modem/Fax Quality VOIP. Some DSL isn't even good enough, but since there is no naked DSL in Ireland, you have an analogue line anyway with DSL.

You'll have to cancel Multiroom and either pay a full sub or use the 2nd box just for free channels.

"Three" have no Broadband service whatsoever. Only Data over Mobile Phone. It's fast Dial up. You can actually configure Windows Dial-up networking SW and no other SW to use a 3G dongle. No 3G service will ever be broadband.

I had a bit of an epiphany last night, I don't think we would ever use both of the TV's with Sky at the same time. So one Sky box will do the job, if I use an AV/IR router... We have 3 TV's, Sitting room, Kitchen and bedroom. So why not link to all 3!

Connect Main TV and transmitter to Sky box, and TV #2 and #3 to recievers. Use the Sky remote to control what ever TV your watching, or as I have 2 already, I might get another one and tune them into their respective TV's. The same thing will be transmitted to all TV's, so don't get caught watching something you shouldn't!:D

As I said in my previous post, unless they contact you then you're sorted. If you cancel the multiroom then simply remove the card and plug the box out and in again to get the fta channels on it.;)
