    Need more info.

    Hatch, saloon, coupe, estate...etc

    Engine size?

    What mileage are you doing?

    Petrol or Diesel?

Any requirements outside those? Do you need a lot of space?

Complete novice so don't have any preference. Just want something thats reliable.
Will travel maybe once a month between Galway and Limerick, the rest of the time once a week to the nearest tesco.......

Have you considered the cost of tax and insurance? Once you make this clear along with any other preferences no matter how seemingly trivial you'll get more responses on here. At the moment you're a bit vague.

For what it's worth I'd consider a Honda Accord. Totally reliable if not abused, big enough, efficient, safe, decent engine, good image, and cheap.

Something like this maybe. Price isn't great on this particular model but it serves as an example.
