Anyone know of software that allows you to have free texts sent to your mobile when you receive a new email in your gmail account etc.?

Have a look at this thread. Haven't done it myself as I have email on my phone, but it seems relevant to what you want.

Would it not be easier to get your emails straight to your phone? Android, iOS and windows mobile are all pretty good for email on the fly.

I have had email on my phone for a while. Where I'm coming from is my phone goes online everytime it checks for new emails. I have a PC on broadband 24/7 at home, was hoping to use the text option to avoid any need for my phone to go online for push email.

Sorry no help for gmail, but I get texts when an email arrives at an @vodafone.ie address. Perhaps you could create one of those and maybe auto-forward from gmail ?

if youre with meteor you can forward msgs to yournumber@mms.mymeteor.ie and they will arrive on your phone as mms.

nb - if the forwarding fails a msg will bounce back to whoever sent you the email and it will contain your phone number.
    nb2 - this is not 100% reliable.

Seems like the best option is to just let your phone handle the email itself. Are you getting data for a reasonable price?

I had the phone pushing email every hour which added up! I just thought there must be a way to utilise the always on broadband connection at home to send text alerts avoidng any cost on the phone for new email notification. It would be nice to only go online on the phone when you know there's new email there.
