Just curious to if any of you buy any of the golf magazines out there.

I like Today's Golfer and Golf Monthly dont buy them every month I would say maybe 3 times a year for each.

Which ones do you like or not like and why?

I like Today's Golfer and always have as it quiet easy read without being too boring and same with Golf Monthly.

I used to buy them, but rarely nowadays ..... (a) because of the price ripp off and (b) because they were getting to the stage that 75% was adverts. It was also noticable that they would promote their advertisers when reviewing clubs, so the reviews were biased and that finished me with them.

All the info you need can be got online.

I'd only buy them if I was getting on a plane. I don't think they do any good because each one you read has a different tip or practise drill. I don't think it's healthy to fill your head with very single aspect of the golf swing. It's tough enough to work on one aspect of the swing at a time.

You'd be changing your swing/putting every week if you read a magazine every week. Maybe Harrington is reading them ha.

Golf International (really good but also not cheap!) & usually Golf Digest Ireland. THe latter aint great but is reasonably priced & usually takes the best from Golf Digest USA.

i'd be the same as Noel, in the airport - nothing to read...get a golf mag!

i find that because im a high handicapper trying to get lower the golf mags fill my head with stuff that i shouldnt be worrying about so i tend to stay clear....its almost like if i was to start putting with the magazine i'd drop shots:D..thats how ad focused these things are!

I get Golf World every month without fail. Love reading it. Dont take too much notice of the tips though, it's not that I dont need them but they dont always apply to your own game and can feck things up if anything. Ill take heed of tips in there now and again though and they actually had a brilliant article a few issues back about tips for a one plane swing and tips for a two plane swing. I love reading their course rankings issues and their major championship suppliments and I often find that other magazines, namely Golf Digest Ireland, rehash Golf Worlds articles a month or two later in their own publicasions. I get Golf Monthly every now and again also. I just much prefer to sitting down and reading physical books/magazines rather than reading online.

I get Golf International Magazine. Handy for the train.
Pricey but when we spend what we do on this game it seems wrong to complain.

I can get over the obvious plugs for Sky Sports in it (which is a partner), as it's a fairly comprehensive and intelligent.

Have to say between myself and one of the other lads we buy most of the mags each month then swap them. Instruction articles the only part I don't read.

They've got England's Top 100 this month (same issue as their British Open coverage), and Ireland's Top 100 next month...

My father works with a guy who picks up nearly every one out their so he picks them up off him when he is done and gives them to me. Usually a month or two old but hey for free how bad. I throw them on the shelf in the bathroom then. Nothing like an Ian Poulter article when your on the john :p

i bought 2 last month as used to buy em all the time years ago, bit of a shocked the price nowadays, easons was reasonable though as seen two higher prices since, anyway years ago you would get a golf ball or something as a pressie, this time I couldn't make my mind up on the one with the free marker and the one with the towel so I got both, man what a disappointment (the freebies were), I now use the 'towel' to blow my nose in the car lol

one of em had Rory on the front giving some tips on how to play a fews holes strategically, super timing for them.

Completely agree, Golf World is by far the best of the magazines. There's a lot of reading in it, very informative and some really good interviews/features with various players each month. I usually just glance very quickly at the swing tips/instructions sections. Thankfully these take up less than 20% of the magazine which is why it is my favourite. The last time I bought Golf Monthly I found myself skipping over half the entire content which made it very poor value for money.

I go for Golf World also. Some very good articles.

I don't bother with them any more.
As far as tips go, there are three major instruction problems with the magazines:
    1. Too much inconsitent info to mess with your game: Take your average "cure your slice" cover headline. Early in the magazine, you'll have one "top instructor" with a set of drills. Further down the magazine, another instructor is providing a set of drills that completely contradict the previous lot.
    2. Sponsored pro-tips: One recent magazine I read had a leading tour player giving his 8 tips to hitting it further and straighter. Tip 2 started "I've just put these <brand x> irons in the bag and the ball just flies off them."
    3. Ridiculous drills: Would you really get away with hijacking a green at your club and decking it out with ski poles, hula hoops, broom handles and rope as practice aids? How many people have readily available access to impact bags and multpile video cameras?

The other thing that annoys me about the magazines is that they never seem to review the lesser known courses. There are supposedly over 300 golf courses in Ireland. The magazines seem to only review the same handful.
Take an average publications review of Irish courses. How many will not feature the K-Club, Royal Portrush, Royal County Down, Old Head of Kinsale, Portmarnock, etc?
