Dust Extraction Fan

Hi there. Hope someone here can answer my question

A friend of mine has made a dust extraction fan for his lathe to get rid of sawdust.

However there is a lot of disturbance around the edge of the box and the dust is swirling all over the place. The box is little more tapered than what I have drawn but the pic should give you an idea of what I mean.

What would he need to do to minimise the messy airflow around the edges of his box? Box is made out of 12mm ply. Would the thickness of the material cause an issue?

Fan is about 10 inches in diameter and box about 16 inches square at widest point.

    Thanks

There might be vortices forming at the edge of the box which are causing the dust to swirl. I'd try making the box taper as gradual as possible (like the end of a trumpet) so the airflow doesn't have as sharp a transition, and make the box section itself longer (fan further from the edge).

    Thanks Bill.

We can give that a shot I suppose. I'll let you know it goes..
