Mobile Broadband under Linux

It's impossible trying to find information on setting up mobile broadband on Linux - at least I found it very hard to find any data on how to do it for Irish mobile broadband providers.

I was thinking a thread for reference would be in order! :D If anyone else has set it up on other systems feel free to add to what I have written!

For "Linux Mint Debian" (the only I have used it on so far) once it is plugged in an option for new Mobile Broadband device pops up in NetworkManager Applet there is a simple setup wizard, the only curve-ball i found was what the APN (Access Point Name) was! This is buried in the settings in Windows...

    APN: broadband.eircommbb.ie

Are there a username and password required?
Are there specific DNS servers or did it all just come up automatically when you set the apn ?

I didn't have to put a username and password in, and everything else happened automatically.

In fact it may have been easier if I was using meteor/o2/vodafone as there was dropdown options for them, but I didn't bother looking into it too much.

But now the fecking dongle has stopped connecting to the internet no matter which OS I use (Would anyone know what to do?)

Thanks. The reason I asked is so that we can try to get the new network added to the list of network providers. Once the patch is accepted, it should appear in the dropdown menu for all distros that use network manager in future.

Any chance you've locked the dongle by mistakenly not putting the PIN in somewhere?
Try putting the SIM into a phone and see what happens. Ideally, you should remove the PIN lock on it to prevent this happening again.
Alternatively, you may just be out of credit!

Cool, the phone works, no PIN needed, and seems to have coverage...

I'll report back on what the exact problem is, I started a thread on the emobile site so hopefully I'll get it working!

Can you post a link on this thread to the emobile thread?
    I'd like to follow it.

I've answered this in Post #10 here

Sorry I forgot about this thread.. (especially at niallb)

Anyway I came to the conclusion that the dongle was broken (It wouldn't work in either linux or windows and the sim itself worked in my phone) So when I discovered that I had lost the SIM number and PIN code (which were on a little scrap of paper) I gave up.

The thread on the emobile forum just had one response telling me to contact them by phone.

Hi Guys I have a similar problem, beside that at some stage I will look for the access data to connect with Ubuntu. I got this fast Huawei E353 eMobile broadband dongle in order to use it with my unlocked router , which worked fine with O2 Dongle Huawei E1752C. The E353 keeps blinking in blue and all the LED's on the router are on but it doesn't get me any connection. I was able to set a new profile (as somebody described) and used the above mentioned APN (broadband.eircommbb.ie) didn't add any Dial-up, PPP User name, PPP password or IP address because I don't have any, no joy so, still no connection. eMobile forum is not much help either, they properly want to sell there WIFI Dongle!? Anybody with a hot tip?
