Cheap Media Centre

I was thinking of building or buying a pre made media centre type device for the living room.

I've been using a WDTV for ages which is good but it needs replacing now and an upgrade to something more versatile is in order.

I basically want something that is small and can play all video files (720p MKV etc)

And have internet browsing capability & network for connecting to Homegroup
Hard drive space is not important
Dvd drive might be handy but not essential
    HDMI out for tv (obviously!)

Nothing else needed feature wise, that's all covered by other things in the house already

What is the absolute minimum specs i should be looking at for something like this? CPU?Graphics/Ram and am i better off building myself or buying a pre made one?

    Thanks
